GHS Precision Flats Vs LaBella 760FX

Of those two, the LaBellas are quite a bit brighter, closer to the TIs. I think that tension-wise, the LaBellas are just a bit lighter than average, but nowhere near as light as the TIs, whereas the GHS Precisions are more on the heavy side. (I happen to prefer the GHS Precisions, because I...

    Does flatwounds without silk exist?

I have a set of Picato flats that have no silk at the tuner end. (Can't remember what the ball end is like.)

New Steve Harris Flats From ROTO

In order for Roto to call them "smoother", they only need to be smoother than Roto's existing flats (the monel jazz ones), which aren't exactly smooth.

    String recommendations please Carvin LB90

I'd have thought tapes would be bright enough, but then again it's always going to be a subjective thing. For what it's worth, I'm really happy with Pyramid Black tapes on my Carvin LB75. Most tapewounds are about the same brightness, except for the Rotosound ones - they're probably the least...

    Flatwounds for a beatle bass?

I've had flats made by Fender, GHS, TI, Roto, D'Addario and Picato, and my experience is that Pyramid Golds have a smoother finish than any of those. If I got a set from them with a rough finish, I'd be wanting to have it replaced.

Did I kill my E string, or is it just a flatwound thing?

My experience with GHS Precision flats was more like 2+2, that is: the E and A strings had a quieter and softer sound, and the top two strings were much brighter. (As it happens I much preferred the softer sound of the lower strings, but that's just me.) It may just be that these strings are...

    Pyramid Gold flats, E-string gauge?

I bought a set of Golds about 3 years ago, and I found them to have really good consistency from string to string, (better than GHS Precision flats and Rotosound Jazz flats), can't remember what gauge they are. I haven't had any of the issues that some have reported with Pyramids; whether that...

    Fretless String Advice?

I've used the D'Addario tapes and the Rotosound monel flats on fretless. I'd say the tapes would be pretty close to what you're looking for, and the Rotos wouldn't. (Those Rotos are some of the least flat-sounding flats I've ever played, they have a little bit of roundwound-style growl and clank...

Where can I find Black Nylon Flats for my Hofner?

Pyramid Black tapewounds are also available in short scale, but at 055-075-100-115 they're a bit thicker than you're looking for.

    LaBella Tapewound For Headless

Can't help you with your question, but thought I'd point out that Status Graphite also make double-ball tapewounds in-house, and one assumes they'd know a thing or two about headless basses. http://www.status-graphite.com/status/frames/stringsinfo.html

    Flats with purple silk

Most likely GHS as others have said, but could possibly be Pyramid Golds.

    5 string bass strings

+1 on the Pyramid Golds. 5 string sets can be hard to find, but you can apparently get them by special order. Before I got around to that, I tried the B string off a set of Labella FL's, and I was happy enough that I stuck with it.

    Monel Flats

The roto monel strings are the least flat flats I've ever tried, in terms of how they feel. As others have said, they will improve a bit, but I'd say if you really want strings that are smooth to the touch, you'll have to look elsewhere.

The heroes who defined your tone

The thing is that you can start out with an idea of what you want to sound like, but the instrument (and strings, pickups, etc) have their own ideas about how you're going to sound, and it seems to me that what you end up doing is learning how to carve something good out of the lump of...

Best place to shop strings? (UK)

Invalid Link Removed The website is a little clunky, but there's also actual real people there that you can talk to on the phone or email, and who'll do useful things like tell you the lead time on stuff they don't have in stock, or even stuff they don't normally carry. Price is usually good, too.
