The first time I played a uke bass I was shocked by how much I loved the sound (just like an upright)and the feel. It is a different feel to be sure but in a few days it just feels normal.

Get a can of contact cleaner and it will solve your problems. Just remove the knobs and spray the crap out os the pots...
