Band drama... on a whole new level

Here's a quick backstory:
We formed our band around one year and a half ago. We played New Wave/Post Punk covers and we always got along for the most part. We always had different opinions about some things of course, but we always found a way to make things work.
During the pandemic we recorded a lot of covers and put them on my personal Google Drive. I've gave full access to everybody on the band's folder.
Long story short... we split last week for a number of reasons. It was inevitable, believe me on that. But we all agreed about hanging out together again as soon as possible. We split musically, but (I thought) not personally.
Well... I discovered that our former keyboard player completely sabotaged my Drive. He deleted almost everything and we basically lost most of the stuff we recorded. I'm sure about this because of Google Drive's logs. It shows everything he's done and it's horrible. He deleted almost everyting and possibly tried to take control of the folder. He defended himself saying that he was trying to "save space".

You know, if he didn’t “empty the trash” or whatever google calls it, you can recover all the deleted files. If he did do that, there’s no possible way he did it by accident.

He did emptied the trash, of course. That's the first thing I've checked. Logs are pretty clear on my Drive, he literaly sabotaged almost everything. I feel sorry for him to be honest.

Personally, I didn't. I treat my personal Drive... as a drive. I would never imagined that somebody I know in person would destroy everything I shared with him. Unshared/personal content is safe, nobody can touch it.
I have a copy of my bass parts for the most recent stuff I recorded inside my Reaper projects directory, but the older stuff is lost. I needed to format my PC and used the Drive as a backup.

Even if you've moved on it sucks that what seemed like positive breakup is now tainted by this jerk who also robbed you of bring able to enjoy and make use of the recordings you made.
That's a loss and a disappointment.

Sorry to deal with such an ass-hat, but honestly, it's everyone's responsibility to keep copies of things they want to keep that are stored on a shared drive. I always copied files that were important to me to my local drive.

Glad you found a new home.

You always back up that kind of stuff physically and/ or in more than one place. Something could have happened to an online only archive even if it wasn't intentionally sabotaged.

He was the guy he was in the end..........the whole time. Reverse engineer the whole relationship and you'll see clues. Sad.

Seems plausible, especially if he's not an advanced user. I've worked with google drive for years, and many people I work with haven't quite figured it out yet. If it seems that there were no hard feelings and you guys are all still friends, maybe you need give him the benefit of the doubt. In general though, make sure you keep backups, or allow your friends 'view only' access in your google drive so they can't erase or edit your files.

I think there is a way to recover though, maybe could work for you - Read the part about restoring permanently deleted files with G Suite Admin Console:

That's lame. Can you use google versioning to bring back the files deleted?

Joke aside, sorry for your loss of data. In future, try to keep as much as you can back ups and: don't trust people! Doesn't matter who they are and how close you are. Everything is possible! Trust me.
