Effect for hip hop: Bass Micro Synth, OC-2, or other?

OC-2 > BMS for modern hop sounds. I like BMS for 70s synth tones - use it if you want to sound like hip-hop that samples P-funk or something. OC-2 or some sort of low-pass filter (MF-101 with expression) would suit current hip-hop better.

Getting a Precision to sound Stingray-esque

Currently playing a P. Like it fine enough. However: half of the punk/hardcore tones I like are from Stingrays. This leads to the question: any idea on how to get a sound that's both P-ish and Stingray-ish in the same instrument? My stupid brain says something like EMG PAX (X-series for a...

GK 1001 RB II with what cab, you chose

GK 4x12 or two 8 ohm GK 4x10s. From your list: just buy a 4 ohm GK 4x10. Honestly better than mixing drivers.

    Advice on warm rounds??

GHS Bass Boomers or Dean Markley NPS Roundcore. Both break in very quickly; choose based on whether you want round or hex core.

NBD - 2013 Modern Player Jazz

Necro'ing this thread. Could one of you fine people with a Modern Player Jazz Satin V measure the neck and neck pocket dimensions? I'm a fretless guy and would love to swap out the neck for an unlined Warmoth Standard 5 one if it's possible. ... help?

FULL BAND MIX - 7 Basses Shoot Out!

Definitely the Precision or the Jazz for me. That said: I really liked the grind you got out of the Thunderbird - the second section of its clip sounded really, really great.

    7 sting pickups?

I've used the Barts, as well as the Bill Dickens Signature (single coil) Barts, and a custom set of Nordstrand Dual Coils. I found the Barts (as expected) to be dark; the Nordstrands just didn't do it for me - they seemed to lack a certain complexity to the sound. They sounded honestly like...

    Your got-to gauge, and why?

Anything with more than 40lbs of tension per string starts to feel weird to me. So basically sets with less than that. Usually 0.18/0.20-40-55-75-95-135, depending on the # of strings on the bass.

    Flatwound strings, tonal consistency

A thought: the tensioning on standard flatwound sets is severely unbalanced, which could contribute to tonal differences. I'm currently running a custom set of Chromes, 40-55-75-95, and they seem to have a very balanced sound. About 37lbs of tension per string, and each speaks clearly. ...

    punch and bite

EMGs. The 40DCX if you want maximum bite, the 40CSX if you want bite that won't kill all the things. Pair those with an Aguilar OBP-3 if you want a really aggressive preamp, or an EMG BQC System if you want a flexible/quiet/clean preamp to pair with the above two pickup types.

    Which EMG p/j for fretless?

Bumping my own thread. I went with the PJx set and I'm actually pretty happy with them (the Px sounds awesome, for one). I can see how these would be overkill if you were using rounds; however, I'm really happy with the sound that a balanced tension set of Chromes (40-55-75-95) is giving me...

6-string players - what do you use the top string for?

    Extended chord voicings. That's pretty much it. I could do 99% of what I do with a 6 or 7 on a 5er and probably 80% on a 4 string with an appropriately-set Hipshot. ... I don't think I deserve my C-string.

    Faster fingers? I hate picks!

I'd change your technique to something using three or more fingers, based on my experience. I was stuck at a certain speed using two fingers that I was able to move beyond using three Here's the thing: I HAVE to play more lightly than I do with two fingers to use this technique...
