I think B is the Squier. Pickups on A sound snappier.

If it's 2003 with S1, it should be an American Series bass. Which was the predecessor to the American Standard. That's all semantics though. What's important is it's not a Highway 1 or Highway One.

My JB's pretty dead quiet. Although I've never had major noise issues with Fenders either. Gotta say though, main reason the JB is a keeper is it has the fastest neck I've never played. I've played other G&L's with slightly thicker necks too, so I don't think the fast neck is an inherent JB...

Build quality is very high on the JBs. Mine has a quartersawn neck--not sure if that's standard or not but I rarely see quartersawn necks on Fender American Standards. Pickups sound excellent. A bit more lively and poppy than Fender but that's your discretion.

The L-2000 is the most versatile of all three. It can emulate a precision, jazz, stingray, and 15 other tones--albeit not all 18 switching configurations are equally useful. Just make sure it has a 1.5" neck if you're digging a jazz neck. Between the Fender Jazz and the JB-2, in my experience...

I just wanted to say that to conduct an experiment like this with as few confounding variables as possible will definitely require a good amount of money and resources. It's absolutely possible, just keep in mind the expenses involved. Skimping on any part of the experimental setup would weaken...

Bridges are harder to screw up, at least the simple bridges IMO. Only thing about a bridge from China is sometimes the outer plate finish wears faster. Functionally, a cheap bridge will probably be fine. Tuners may be a different story. There's more mechanical parts and quality requirements...

I own a JB and an L2K. The L2K is indeed very versatile. Lots of pickup options, tone settings, can emulate a jazz pretty well. That said, I grab the JB most of the time. Not sure why. I just like the sound and feel better. Less knobs to deal with. To each his own.
