Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Thanks everyone! I put Kaplan D and G with Flex92 E and A on my bass for now. So far, so good. I like the Flexocors a little more so far, but honestly, they don't sound or play that differently yet, and they work together nicely. Of course, it hasn't even been a full week yet, so we'll see how...

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Thanks everyone! I'm aware that a soundpost adjustment might make a bigger difference in bow response, but I've actually already had my luthier try adjusting for easiest bowing. I'm actually a luthier too, but I work on guitars and bass guitars, not violin/bass family instruments. I might try to...

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Awesome! This is exactly the kind of input I was looking for. I'll probably get a set of the 92 Flexocors. They seem to be the industry standard (if there is such a thing) for us orchestral players, but I've still never tried them. Out of curiosity, can I ask why you switched to the Kaplans and...

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Thanks for the recommendation. I've heard that Jargars are really easy to bow, but people also seem to describe them as quite bright. I'm not sure that would work well on my already bright bass. They're comparatively cheap, though, so I might give them a try sometime.

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Yeah, I'm considering the Kaplans based on price alone, but they seem to get a lot of love, too. I'm a little worried about sacrificing sound if I go to lights, but it might be worth it if my D and G speak better.

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

Thanks for the recommendation! From what I've seen online, people tend to say that the Flexocor 92s are the stiffest of the three Flexocor varieties (others being Originals and Deluxe). Have you played the other Flexocors for reference? I was leaning towards the Deluxe set because they're...

Double Bass Orchestral strings for a bright, tight bass

I need new strings for my bass. I play it exclusively in orchestral/classical situations, so arco performance is the biggest consideration. My problem is that my carved-top, solid flat-back bass is particularly bright sounding, and it's also fairly difficult to bow with the D and G in particular...

    10" practice amp

The SWR Workingman's 10 is an excellent option. I'd definitely stay away from the SWR LA series, though. The Workingman's 10 is small enough for bedroom use, but I've also used it to rehearse in a blues-rock trio and to play acoustic-ish coffee house gigs. Honestly, I've even used it as my...

Can a 5 string PJ ever be as good as 4 string P?

I have two PJs. One is fretted (with roundwounds), and the other is fretless (with flats). My default with the fretless is to have both pickups turned up, but I treat the fretted one like a P-bass that just happens to have an extra pickup when I decide I want it. In either case, if you only have...

Double Bass Bass is difficult to bow

tl;dr: Is there anything y'all can think of (bridge dimensions, sound post location/fit, etc) that would systematically affect how easy or difficult it is to bow a bass? Now with all the details: I've had the same bass for 12 or 14 years now. It's a fairly inexpensive, flat-backed, solid wood...

Amps that work well for bass AND guitar

There's a very good possibility that this question has been posed before. I tried searching, but when your primary search terms are "bass," "guitar," and "amp," it's tough to wade through the results. If you know of an old thread, please feel free to just link me to it. I'm thinking about...

What I wish Fender would make...

As a luthier, I actually prefer these because they effectively adjust the relief from the nut all the way to the last fret. The ones that are adjustable from the headstock don't run all the way to the end of the neck, so sometimes we end up with weird diversions or other issues at the last...

    Multi-instrument stands

I really like the looks of this. The only question I have is how well it does with nitro finishes. Do either of you have any old nitro finished guitars that you keep on this thing?

    Multi-instrument stands

It's a thing: Link Removed Obviously I'd love one, but right now it's pretty substantially out of my price range (and space availability, too, I think).

    Multi-instrument stands

Yeah, I'd like to build one also. The design is simple, and I have the tools. I'll probably build one to better suit me when I have more time. However, I just finished moving, and right now all I care about is getting stuff put away as soon as possible.
