hardwoods=More of a treblely sound Softwoods=More bass/ Middy sound. Your neck should be hardwood, and your body and fret board could be either.

i break picks all the time, i use 1mm, i like to bang on the strings so the pick just breaks from repeated bending back and forth from the force of me hitting the strings.
