If you can only have one bass, I suggest a G&L L2000, the Swiss Army knife of basses. You get a great variety of tones.

Keep in mind that part of the Stingray sound is the preamp, and the P-bass sound is passive. I have tried out lots of used basses where someone has gone to the trouble and expense of modifying an instrument only to be disappointed with the results. Save yourself the headache and just get a P-bass.

Even though I have owned lots of G&L's over the last 15 years, I highly recommend the L2000, because it's extremely versatile, and if you get it with the K-switch (single coil) option, you'll be able to get just about any tone imaginable (except Stingray, which you can get with a Kiloton).

I rarely ever take a spare head (I've had 3 amps fail on a gig in 30 years), but I always carry a Sansamp Bass Driver pedal in my gig bag.
