I love them; got a Bex 4 and a TRBX305 and they're both fine.
I started playing bass in '86 and my first amp was a 30W Wem Dominator. Shortly replaced with a 50W Sound City. Good times.
Consider a Yamaha Bex4 if you can find one for the right money.
I've got one of these too. I usually play it through a Genz Benz Streamer and a couple of 112s, but sometimes just through a Tech 21 Bass Driver...
Just to add to what Linnin said, are you using an instrument cable or a speaker cable?
Mine has a battery compartment next to the jack socket. Just opened it up and there are two hearing aid/digital watch type batteries.
I don't think that it makes a lot of difference, your fingers soon work out what they need to do. So try a few and go for what feels right.
