Double Bass How often do you polish/clean your bass?

To my knowledge, none of my basses have ever gotten a polish, unless something spilled on them. That includes my '78 P Bass, which I have owned since ´96. This does not include wiping off the neck during gigs.

are bassists only string players, or can anybody join the club?

If you think about it, a bass is not a specific instrument. It is short for bass guitar, bass synth, bass saxophone, etc. If a bass guitarist is a bassist, I don't see why people playing other bass instruments can't call themselves bassists.

    Lakland 55-02 Neck joint

Is it a new one? I would never accept this. New or used. Just a matter of who I would contact to complain to.

Compression vs EQ Pedal Advice (And other good stuff)

Just to add to what has already been said above. An EQ before a compressor can radically change how the compressor responds. So, depending on the sound you are going for and the type of compressor, an EQ before compression can be a huge tool in sculpting your sound. For EQ after the compressor...

    Low E suddenly distorting.

The first thing I would check is if the pickup is too close to the E string. Try lowering the pickup and see if it goes away.

Why do old people need everything right away?

Why do people always think that their own personal experience with someone applies universally to the whole population?

Hand-held high quality recorders - recommendations please?

Either one should be fine. You should be able to (and should) turn off the auto gain function (compression). When that is done the most important thing is to set the gain so it wont clip and find the best sounding spot in the room (often overlooked) you are recording. Record to 24 bit raw (wav)...

Who Will Work More in Today's Music Climate - Player w/Old-school P/Flats or more Modern type tone?

Obviously the one who can pull off both will get the most work. It's not uncommon to have several basses, stringed with different types of strings for multiple tonal options. I think that a bassist that has only one bass and uses only one type of strings will not find much work unless his...

TI Jazz Flats is it just me?

I've used them for awhile now (probably around 7 years). I've always found that on new sets the D and G strings are more dull then the E and A. It takes a couple of weeks to even out. But that's when the sweetness settles in. I've been using my current set for over 3 years and I have no...

    ID this bass and tone

I'd say he has an extremely low action, thus the percussive sound when he plucks. Fresh roundwounds and an auto wah effect. Lows rolled off.

Punk Rock bass players,I need help!

Nothing screams Punk more than a "Use whatever you can get your hands on". It's punk.

Delay pedals that don't add a bunch of low-end noise

You should try a pedal that has a high-pass filter. Lower frequencies tend to cause phase issues when the delayed signal blends with the original. I imagine that the delay in question does not actually add anything to the signal as you suggest, but the muddiness you hear is because of these...

    Recording on laptop

The more RAM the better (4GB absolute minimum). I would go for quad-core CPU. Use an external soundcard. You can't rely on laptop soundcards for low latency recording.

Truss rod all the way loose....

When I moved to Denmark, one of my basses developed a back bow even though the truss rod is completely loose. The back of the neck is completely sealed by the finish while the fretboard is just oiled wood. I imagine the reason to be that the (almost) open wood expands in the humidity while the...

How stupid is this idea? "Homemade Poor-mans Preamp Pedal"

Many have spent much more for temporary pleasures that have nothing to show for when it's over. Actually I did the same thing with an EMG preamp that I ripped out of a modified BB3000 bass I bought. Haven't really used it for anything, but it was fun.
