Neck relief as a function of string gauge

Yes. Lighter strings have less tension, so an equal pluck from your finger will cause it to deflect more and need more clearance. Consider your own experience, if you tune the G string to low E, as if it were a very light E string, doesn't it flop around and hit the frets? That's an extreme form...

Nice score, hell of a deal.

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass or Epiphone Toby Deluxe IV Bass

Then I must be misunderstanding "Split-Humbucker" like it says on the product page here..

How can you HATE a bass?

Some folks have stories and reasons to hate a bass. Sometimes they make YouTube videos. Davey and the Rickenbacher

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass or Epiphone Toby Deluxe IV Bass

The Toby certainly looks more metal, if that matters to you. The differences I see are the Toby has active electronics on two split humbucker pickups. The Jazz is passive on two single coils. The neck profiles are different, The Toby is 1.625 inch at the nut with an asymmetrical profile, the...

    Wanting to play bass...

Three bits of advice: First an amp, I would recommend the Ampeg BA combo series. I've got a BA108 for practicing, I like it. I think it has good sound for a practice amp and for $100 new it's hard to beat. Think about buying used. You can get more value for your dollar if you don't mind...

TBers I Need Help… New bass buzzing like crazy

I have a VM Jag SS and it's fine aside from the J pickup being lame. I've also got the regular VM Jag (black/tort) and it's excellent. My VM P is lovely. However I've also got a VM Jazz that's a fretwork disaster. I found it difficult to justify the money for a full fret job on that one when I...

Do Stickers Make a Bass Trashy?

What! He even wrote his name on his bass for you: Link Removed Paul Simonon. I pretty much agree with the "guitars are tools not trophies" philosophy, but I'm not sure I could cut my name into the finish of a new bass. Stickers? You can do better then that, go fetch a knife. ;) Maybe...

My first set-up that I have done on someone else's bass

I can't vouch for Mojotone, but they list [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] covers for a Jazz V with precise measurements. That is odd, the usual suspects don't seem to carry that cover. Mojotone's website lists an address and phone numbers, their Youtube...

My first set-up that I have done on someone else's bass

Indeed, tape off a maple fret board or use a Invalid Link Removed with a couple masking tape wings on it. But if you aren't careful, doesn't the steel wool's abrasiveness scuff up the fretboard finish on a maple neck? I haven't had any issues with rosewood and Nevr-dull. You're not polishing the...

My first set-up that I have done on someone else's bass

First - good job, she looks nice. Second - tossing it out as a thought, because many folks will disagree, you may want to rethink using steel wool to polish the frets. Look at your fret picture, see all that steel fiber at the bottom of the photo and on the fretboard? Pickup magnets love...

Blacktop P bass for $350 - good deal?

$350 seems to be the going rate for used blacktop guitars. That's 70% of street price. If it's from a store, 350 is a fair price. If it's from a friend... not so much.
