Double Bass Let’s Compare a Cheap Chinese Bow to a Fine European Bow

Just got an advanced German snakewood bow from Jimmy at Wangbow. $360 with shipping. Very nice workmanship, well balanced, beautiful wood. Very graceful looking stick with plenty of backbone but still very responsive. Well haired wide ribbon. My other bows are a Chinese pernambuco, which is...

Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

I have a set of their early strings. When I put these on my 1st bass, I did move the post a little further away. With less tension to drive the top it makes sense. I took them off that bass after a year when I had a problem with the G. I went to other strings on that bass. When I finished my 2nd...

Maybe a little more string height, maybe not. Depends on scoop of your fingerboard. Big difference from Perpetuals, I didn't care for them too much. Comparison is like Wizard of Oz when they get to the emerald city, everything is in color ;-)

Rob I had Temperas on for close to a year but no experience with Sonores. When I bought them they were sold as an arco string. They sound good pizz but are not going to growl. I would not consider them a jazz string. I would think they are great for solo and orchestral work on a darker bass than...

Double Bass Maestro Petracchi's Gaetano Rossi

Thanks Casey, I wrote to Marco Noli and he confirmed the sizes listed in the folio, although he was tight lipped about anything else I asked;). The folio ,which arrived yesterday BTW, is gorgeous! Plastic laminated 3-fold with shots of front, back, sides and full size views of the side, back and...

Double Bass Maestro Petracchi's Gaetano Rossi

I'm building a model of this bass in 3/4 size but wondering if anyone has the actual measurements. There is a poster that I was told lists length as 121 cm and lower bout 72.2cm. Really? Wow! At 5'7" I don't think it would be my personal bass.

Double Bass How to approach Petracchi - Simplified Higher Technique

3rd finger for the exercises anyway. I'll see where it goes for a little while.

Double Bass How to approach Petracchi - Simplified Higher Technique

Thanks Neil, I will continue using the 3rd finger approach. It demonstrated that it was collapsing so I think work on thumb placement behind the neck is in order. Petracchi method, good stuff.

Double Bass How to approach Petracchi - Simplified Higher Technique

A quick question for the Petracchi folks. For ex 2b, my copy shows using fingers 1,3,4 starting at the open G all the way up to thumb position on the D. 1&3 for a 1/2 step. I watched this guy-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIAkbd25jG8 play it and he is using 1,2,4 like a standard fingering...

IMO Tempera's are very similar to Velvet Compas 180 pizz and even more responsive arco. That's why I'm here ;-)

I can't help with how they are playing in an orchestra but I had belcantos on previously. The tempera are much clearer in every position and I don't think the tension is that much lower.
