Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

i'd love to know what the sonores "true hybrid" string is and how it compares. When i get an extension made for my bass i'd like to order a full set of strings, and the temperas i'll switch to my backup bass. whether it's another set of tempera hybrid or a sonores set i have no idea.

Do you know the the flyer from Gerold with some short informations about his strings?!?

The description there and some communication with Gerold especially about the Helix made me think the Helix to be a "true hybrid" string, which is confirmed by some comments of other players, who use them quite some time now..

just ordered a set of hybrids. They are on their way. I have small holes on my tailpiece so I kind of think I am going to have to have my Luthier widen them to get the leather pieces thru the holes. I have great expectations for these strings (looking for that open overton-y sound I used to get with Animas)

Really? I've been waiting on mine for months. How'd you get your order expedited?

yours should be on the way too. I think they just finished a batch. I didn't JUST order them, maybe a couple weeks but I think Jan-Ole said that my set was previously claimed but maybe then cancelled and I just lucked out.

@koricancowboy - its to be expected as we order by bass mensure/string specs, so a cancelled order can't necessarily move to the 'next in line', but the next with same/similar bass specs. Either way 'somethings coming'...

I got these several weeks back and never got around to stringing them up.. Just put them on, and... wow.

Ive been waiting for these (like30yrs) LOL. I just gotta say the lower tension is exactly what I was looking for. I played Eudoxa's back in the 80s and stopped once the prices soared. —funny these are up there $$$, but I just had to try em. SO glad I did.

Over the past few decades ive been wishing I could have a set 'at pitch', that was the tension of D-G-C-F. These are it. I feel the bass is more open, I have more expression, and can 'dig-in' more as well. But probably the nicest element of the set is the attack. Very reminesant of the gut sound, there's a 'snap' and airiness.

For me, the attack, harmonics, and dyads/double-stops are nice... but the DG could use alittle 'more'. And while the general tone is full and on the darker side (which I don't mind), it'd be nice to get alittle more presence, possibly brighter response.

After about 30min of initial playing, I think I'll need to adjust the post. I see in the paperwork they say (to paraphrase) "SP can be placed slightly farther from the bridge". I think this bass may need the other direction—So I'll start there tomorrow after I hear how the strings settle-in a bit.

Im curious what others have found with their basses; did you also experiment with the post? what were you hearing and what action was taken? I have a 320g ebony Tailpiece, but very curious about the 400+gram OEM tailpiece—has anyone added weight to their TP to test out any sound/feel differences?

*I also see they mention the projection being "consistently limited and sound significantly filtered" by adjustable bridges. I using a yamahiko setup so that'll stay, but curious was others have experienced/heard with their adjustable bridges.

I have a set of their early strings. When I put these on my 1st bass, I did move the post a little further away. With less tension to drive the top it makes sense. I took them off that bass after a year when I had a problem with the G. I went to other strings on that bass. When I finished my 2nd bass I put Jargars, then Belcanto w/ Spiro E then a mix of Spiro Belcanto and Passione. I finally gave up and put on the Old Temperas with a new G that Jan-Ole was kind enough to send me. Wow! I didn't have to do anything with soundpost adjustments or anything else. This set was purchased for a 3/4 bass with a 104cm string length, they are now on my 5/8 Gaetano Rossi copy with a 101cm string length.

In your case for a little more focus/presence yes try just nudging the post up a mm or 2 and maybe towards the f a little but maybe just play them a little 1st. Enjoy!

After several months (and a few initial tweaks to my post), I'm really enjoying the Basso set but very curious about what the Hybrids could bring to the table. Can anyone offer direct comparisons?

I had the early version of hybrids at the same time with previous version of Bassos. I sold the Hybrids because I liked Bassos better also for jazz pizz. It´s been a while so I don´t remember the hybrids that well but I just liked the colour of tone better on the Basso set.
I was too busy selling the Hybrids because I played an amplified gig afterwards on Bassos and noticed that I had difficulties hearing myself with a drummer. So maybe the Bassos are too soft for amplified band situations. Or then it was my bass that I had just bought. It may be on a soft side - I don´t know. I surely would like to try the new Hybrids again. Now I´ve used the Bassos only for arco playing and have another bass with different strings for jazz.
By the way, does anybody know of a professional players or a section playing on Tempera Bassos in the orchestra?

yeah synthetic core strings (in general) do have 'a lesser' ping/attack compared to steel core—feels like your attack is buried in the group setting. I love the sound/feel of the Bassos, but would like alittle more top end attack, wondering if the Hybrids will get me there and still have that sweet arco? (I know im splitting' hares, in this rabbit hole)

I remember Bassos having more highs than Hybrids but every bass is different. New Bassos have at first highs like a new set of Spiros. Starting the open A is still sometimes scratchy for me.
