Double Bass So Gerold’s cooking up something new...

Maybe I missed something? Like a description of what sets these strings apart from a) other strings, and b) his other strings?
It is my understanding that TEMPERA is a different a different company altogether.
This is what Gerold wrote in the Sonores newsletter:
"We founded the Tempera Strings GmbH in 2019. Tempera forge a somewhat new path. The background: In the past 30 years I was always in the process of developing and improving. That was necessary to achieve the quality that we have today. Since I now reached a level of quality, the time demands for a constant product. This will be the Tempera String. The positive side effect of this change will be an easier production process and therefore a better availability of the strings.
Though Sonores will remain an ongoing inventive and research-based model, the Tempera String itself is more like a full-stop at the end of sentence. In other words, Sonores will continue as usual: Develop new models, respond to specific requests (eg. special tunings) and always come up with something new. Tempera, on the other hand, will be completely consistent, offering a more reduced palette of string models swiftly and reliably."

Yeah, let’s merge or continue in the Sonores thread. I started a new thread since it’s a sister brand to Sonores, and to discuss it specifically.
Seems to me like these Tempera Strings are indeed a new branch so maybe it makes sense to leave it like this...
Did anyone have the chance to try out a prototype yet?? I find it actually an extremely smart idea to split the workshop into 2 companys. Gerolds strings are in my opinion the best in the world but it was very hard to get them recently. Like this the quality should be kept same but it will be available for more bassists. Awesome. I think I will pass by the workshop (after corona) maybe theres already a sample to try out!! ;-)

This is Jan-Ole, the colleague of Gerold. Its my job to answer the emails referring to Tempera
So, the first model of Tempera will be a set that is optimized for Arco. For Pizz it is not our ideal, though we know that some players also like a very signing and sustainy sound…. If not: until we release the set for pizz it might be clever to stick with Sonores Strings.

hm, that’s hard to answer. Yes and no! maybe it gets closest to the Basso Set or the Red Label. Sound wise its very comparable to those but handling wise we went a slightly different way. They are for example a little more resistant against bow weight without loosing their capabilities for modulation. The intention was to create something that works a bit like a usual "modern string" but with more musical possibilities.

Does this imply, that his ideal pizz sound is not singing and not sustaining???
Then I'd rather go with his "arco" set.

my experience with Gerold, having met him and sampled his sets a few times, is that he tends to prefer, if not equate pizz for jazz with a more “old school” sound.

Yeah, kind of funny to describe “singing” and “sustaining” as a non pizzicato quality .
I do rock, however, a set of his basso strings, and if these new tempura, err, tempera are anything like them, they’ll be, well, yummy for my pizzicato use

he didnt say that did he? Actually Gerold once recommended me his Basso for my purposes too. He is not against that, I just suppose his personal taste is more on the punchy side with a little faster decay. But yeah actually I find Gerolds thick strings, especially the APs very singing too. Anyway, to me his is definitly the most innovative thinking string maker on the market. And this is not about sustain or no sustain, old school or modern, this is about strings that lets you express want you want to express.

I don't think they're taking orders yet, also have to ask about price. I just put on a 7mo old set of Compas 180(thanks Sam) to replace Perpetuals which were a short "like" affair so the Velvets will keep me happy for a while.Then I'll try the Temperas.

Judging from the history of strings you tried recently we might search for sth similar. (Perpetuals and Compas were on my bass too once) So lets keep in touch!
... ah, by the way. So far the basso set from Genssler is the solution for me. Arco its perfect anyway but pizz also! Warm and beautiful with a touch of gut feel maybe.
