Is there a semi-hollow that actually weights less than a solid?

Rob Allen - all of his are light.

    Old Houses - Whatcha Got

My house was part of the post-WW2 boom. I've been here since '80, several remodels/upgrades over all those years.

The musician of the 20th century?

If there are any classical music fans, YoYo Ma is extraordinary. I was fortunate to see him several times with the San Francisco Symphony both as a soloist and as part of small ensembles. He brought energy, joy and perfection every time.

The musician of the 20th century?

If it's composers, I've always loved Aaron Copland. I felt they should play "Fanfare for the Common" when I entered my office. Of course, it never happened. If it's performers, Miles Davis. But, there are so many that are extraordinary.

    The best fretless bass

I think it depends on what you want in a fretless. I wanted as much mwwwaaaa as I could get. I played a Santa Cruz fretless and it was terrific. I learned that Rob Allen had started his own shop with the same views on bass making. He was in Santa Barbara at the time and i had friends who lived...

Ethical question about a tree in my yard.

I've had to remove two trees - a California Oak and a Siberian Elm. Neither should have been planted in the first place and both became not only difficult, but also dangerous. Both cost a lot to remove and I did much of the "root" work on the Elm. Getting permits where I live made it also very...

    Short Scale Bass

I started with 30.5 on a Gibson EB-2 and have subsequently purchased a Gibson SG (30.5), American Mustang (30), Ken Smith 5 (34), Sadowsky NYC (34) and Rob Allen Fretless MB-2 (34). I think everyone hears a similar tonal difference - mostly E and G string related, but whether that's good, bad or...

    Bass Weight

My Gibson EB-2 is over 9 pounds and was lighter than the Fender P when I bought it in around '65. Even in my youth it felt heavy after a couple of sets and by the end of 4 my shoulder always hurt. Not was pretty, but the SG is much better for me now, unless I play seated (I'm old now).

What did you do with your "beginner" bass?

I still have my Gibson EB-2 from the 60s. Just bought a new (and wonderful) case for it from Cedar Creek Custom that cost more than the bass when I bought it. It's still a great bass and I only play my SG more often because I leave it out and it's lighter.

What is your favorite debut album from this list?

    Doors, Zep and the Cars.

Best fretwork out of the box?

I second the praise for Gibson. But certainly not Epiphone.

newbie to pedals not even sure what works well for bass

I bought a bunch of pedals, power supply, etc. and ultimately I'm not a fan and don't currently use them for bass, athough occasionally for guitar. I get much more satisfaction playing a different bass. Short scale, long scale, round wound, flat wound, fretted, fretless, ebony board, maple...

    Cedar Creek Guitar Cases

Will try to post them tomorrow. Time in closets extended the life of the old case. Army, college, career all kept it safe.
