    Berklee College of Music

Just to provide some clarity about Berklee Ensemble ratings... there are no "9's" that I can ever remember in my 40 years of teaching in the Berklee Bass Dept. We've had some students with "8's", which may or may not include the previous mentioned wonderful bass players that spent some time at...

(1) get a good bass teacher, learn the neck, all your scales and arpeggios, learn and work on your sight reading skills (2) listen to a lot of different styles of music. Try...

They changed the formula and the rosin doesn't have the bite/grab that the "old" Pop's had. Also, most importantly is the...

Double Bass Strings for Arco on Plywood Basses

I suggest using Obligatos as a good all around string. They work well on plywood basses and carved basses. And they work well arco and jazz pizz. Of course the set up of your instrument is the key to ease of playability. The curvature of the fingerboard, as well as the amount of scoop in the...

What we teach in the Berklee Bass Department

Whit Browne has some suggestions. Well, my esteemed Berklee Bass Brothers have just about listed everything, some wonderful tips to better ourselves on the Bass. Here are a few things that I would like to add: (1) ASSESSMENT: The first thing I do when meeting a new student , is to assess the...

    Most Vintage Flats?

Here's what I use for that "vintage" sound. GHS Precision Flats . Gauge .55 .70.90 1.05. Had them on my '73 Fender Jazz for 14 years now. I follow the Joe Osborn approach, if they sound good don't change 'em. They are really good for playing Jazz, Motown, and any old school bugaloo .
