My Semester at Berklee

Q) I checked your profile, you're in your 30's - did you basically save up the cash to go to Berklee for a term and take extended leave from work? Or are you a pro bassist and doing this in the day time and still working at night?

Either way, I'm just interested (and impressed) that you managed to get yourself there...
I'm 29 and the prospect of saving enough cash to take unpaid leave from work and pay the education fees is pretty much incomprehensible right now! Mind you, I do live in a very expensive town I suppose :(

Interesting point about the age thing! I was reading this thread thinking, "Gee, I wish I had discovered bass and playing music before my undergrad years instead of after ... Gee, I wish I had decided to get serious about music sometime before I entered graduate school in an unrelated field."

Andrew, I'd love to hear more about your Berklee experiences when you have time. I'm also curious if you're one of the older students there and how that plays out. (I know a couple of Berlee grads, but they both went in fresh out high school to the best of my knowledge.) Personally, I just turned 30, started taking sporadic bass lessons for the first time only during the past year, and have grown a lot as a player and a musician as a result.

I can only imagine what it must be like to REALLY immerse yourself in music school for a while -- at any age. Right now, I'm spread too thin to even practice much, but maybe someday...

Anyway, cool thread! Keep it up!

I think we all know the real reason for Mr Turner's 7-string doubleneck. He ain't nothing but a fret-wanking show off who feels the need to make up for his extremely small genetalia with his disgustingly expensive (and not to mention fugly) range of 7 and 8 string monstrosities, fit only for playing the most wanksome prog rock drivel you've ever heard. -Moley

Not tio do a thread highjack, but did Moley REALLY say that?! Not seriousnessly surely?!

Well, I recently turned 30 and just finished my 6th semester at Berklee last summer(took a couple of classes along with Andrew). In my experience, there's lots of students in their late 20's early 30's at Berklee, specially foreign students like myself( around 30% of the student population at Berklee is from foreign countries).I decide to come here an pursue music and bass playing in a serious way, after having an economics degree and a full time job in that field in my country.
In the beginning, it's kind of a shock, because there lot's of young and very talented kids, and it's very easy to do comparisons between them, (some of them involved very seriously in music from a very early age), and you, (I've been playing bass since I was 14 , but as a hobby most of the time, before coming to Berklee), and get a little depressed, but after a while , I changed my mindset, found the right people to play with, just focused on improving myself, and it has been great since.I'm for now, finished with Berklee, I'm moving overseas in a week, and I can say it really was a great musical and educational experience, totally worth the time and money I invested on it, despite any differences in age or background I might have had with some of the other students there.I'll miss it!:bawl:

yeah it must have been deleted. If I remember right I think it was in a thread about why would you play a bass with more four strings or something like that.
