Agile's had 10 strings for ages.

I keep my nails just a touch long. I can play without striking, or hook my fingers to get a bite with a nail if I want. I've never tried playing fingernails full time, I do imagine it'd wear them down. But you could try fingerpicks perhaps?

I voted tone before reading. If it hurts, esp. if you know there's a nerve issue, don't play long scale IMO. There's nothing wrong with playing SS, and you don't want to do yourself any harm. Edit: Time to GAS for the SS bass that sounds as good as your long scale!

I had the same problem with one, which I returned (not for that reason). The guy at the store made them work better than I could somehow. Hotter pickups/preamp, I'm not sure. If you're bass's volumes isn't maxxed already try that.
