I've been using D'addario XL's on my SR406 and like them, I would like to try Elixr's, but I have not gotten around to ordering them. I did try Warwick Steel and Fodera Steels, and I like the D'addario Nickel better, IMHO.

Those are API console strips in the rack w/ the power amp, if you can afford it they sound fantastic.

They used a Jensen transformer, those are know to be pretty good when it comes to microphone preamps. Why not just buy a nice microphone preamp ( w/ parametric eq) w/a DI, or run a Radial JDI into one?
