Double Bass New Gamut Red Diamond Gut Strings

They are beef and not muton which may explain the lower cost.

Hopefully these will be available as singles at some point. I was ready to order a Golden Tone G a week or two ago only to find that they'd been discontinued. I only use gut on my G string, but I think its a big part of the sound a feel I go for. That said, my sweat is acidic and I always seem to "spring up hairs" so I've dreamed of a nylon wrapped string for durability and reduced maintenance. I'd love a review if someone pulls the trigger!

The description of the E and A says that the copper wire wrapping is left "round." Does that mean like a round wound BG string?

I asked Gamut:

Yes, the copper wires on the A-3 and E-4 are left round, as with the traditional contrabass wound strings.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Dan Larson

That raises some questions for me about bow-ability.

Traditional E & A were roundwound, and bowable. A plain A was also common. Yes, the roundwounds may wear the FB more then flatwounds or plain gut.
For arco, it's the polished smooth nylon wrap on the D & G that would worry me.

PS: in the unlikely case that the nylon wrap fails, you're left with a gut core, which will be quite undertensioned at the original tuning.
