Are Heavier gauge strings safe?

When you said cobalt ss strings, are you meaning they’re short scale, or stainless steel? As previously stated, the cobalts aren’t steel, they’re cobalt.

If you haven’t tried flats before, and you like the sound of these, I recommend trying out some EB cobalt flats if you’re curious.
No, cobalts are steel.

Stainless are not steel. They're stainless.
 
I have a Schecter Omen Elite that I really like, but I've always had an issue with the E string sounding dead. I've always used name brand roundwounds usually gauged .45 .65 .80 .100.

One day a friend of mine gave me a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt SS strings gauged .50 -.110 that he had won as a door prize and didn't want, against my better judgement, I stuck them on the Schecter.

WOW! AMEN! HOLY S*** I cant believe the tone and fundamental these things have! The E string is sounding as strong as can be and the whole bass seems to be better balanced. The crazy thing is, I cant really feel that much difference in the feel of the strings as compared to my other basses.

I'm no slouch at bass setups and neck adjustments, but I have to ask the question, will using heavy gauge strings, over time cause any issues with my bass neck?

As long as the truss rod works you should be fine. You may need to adjust is a time or two until it settle in.
 
Depends on your neck and all necks are/can be different. I've had some necks that accept heavy gauge strings just fine and I've had other bass necks where the truss rod was maxed all the way.

I personally like TI Flats because they give an excellent full bass sound and they are low tension and are easy on necks. But, being low tension, they can be floppy and require higher action. But, it depends on the player's plucking style and force.

If you don't feel much difference, chances are that the string tension is the same/similar and minimal or no adjustments are needed.
 
On my guitar+bass hybrid. I can use 95 GHS precision flats to 105 D'Addario Tapes. It is tuned up to G (short scale 29.5), not a typo. I tune a 3rd up. No issues. Did not even have to touch the truss rod. My vintage mustang had GHS mediums tuned to F#. Nothing happened only needed less than 1/4 truss rod adjustment. I think I am putting more tension than a regular tuned 110 in both cases. Like someone said about - Made of wood, strong like bull.
 
I have wondered about this issue too - in particular, stiff strings on my Rickenbacker 4003. I have DR Lo-Riders on my 4003 and while the gauge is the standard 105 set, they appear to be much stiffer than any other string I have tried. While I love the sound of the Lo-Riders, could they contribute to the infamous Ricky tail lift?
 
There's a good bit more to strings than gauge alone. Gauge correlates with string tension and string tension correlates with string stiffness but these are not direct and uniform relationships among various makes/brands, types, or models of strings.

The feel or response of string stiffness suitable for my preferences--including string action/height off the frets-- matters to me, not a string gauge number or X number of pounds of tension/pull.

e.g. 45-105 Rotosound 77 flats are sufficiently stiff for me, I don't need 50-110 Roto 77s (AKA Steve Harris 77s).

For contrast or comparison, 55-105 Fender 9050M flats (their heaviest sets of flats) work for me.

This is strangely a controversial topic with a lot of divided opinions, but I detune my bass after playing, especially when it is strung with heavy strings. Just down a whole tone will spare your neck from the pulling and extra tension. And this is especially important to do for basses that do not have trussrods, such as older Modulus basses, Steinbergers and Aluminum neck instruments such as Kramer and Travis Bean.

Stainless isn't steel. It's stainless. It's an alloy comprised of numerous non ferrous metals. If you don't know what ferrous means, it means it contains iron. Iron is the main component in steel. Hence why steel rusts. If you also didn't know, "rust" is iron oxide.

Stainless steel is a non ferrous metal. It doesn't rust, and the vast majority of stainless alloys are also non magnetic because they either don't contain any, or very very little iron.

"Stainless steel" isn't steel, it's stainless. Cobalts are steel strings.

Stainless steel is a classification that includes many types of steel.
Basically, steel is classified as "stainless steel" if it has a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Small amounts of other metals are always added to improve various properties.
