Double Bass Is this normal now?

It just depends on the gig. If it's just standards, bands where everyone knows a lot of the same tunes will probably play without charts. If it's an ensemble that performs together pretty regularly, they might not need them in that situation either. But if it's a one-off $100 gig of original...

    Double Bass Loose fingerboard?

Sorry for the confusion, the bass itself is buzzing. The string isn't buzzing against the fingerboard. This only really happens with the open G string. It looks correctly placed and even to me. I'll take a closer look and see if there's an issue there.

    Double Bass Loose fingerboard?

Hello luthiers, I'm getting a buzzing noise out of my bass when I pluck the G string. The buzz is louder as I pluck closer to the middle of the string. I recently got a seam closed and tapping around the edges I don't hear or see any other open seams. When I gently pull up or push down on the...

Double Bass Does 1M input enough for DB ? and Rumble amps for DB

Depends on the pickup. I've found most pickups work okay with 1M, but some will get slightly more low end from going higher. The difference is *very* subtle, though. I definitely wouldn't go any lower than 1M.

    Double Bass Cab Mic-ing upright

I hate this sound. I don't know if it's just sound engineers seeing electric bass players usually like a miked cab better and not knowing any better, but it just sounds awful to me. Ron Carter apparently prefers this. For me, either put a mic on the bass or take a DI. The cabinet is just a...

Double Bass DI box with piezo pickup?

According to Link Removed, the Realist is rated at 10 MOhm. To my ears it is very passable at 1, but I do find 10 opens up the low end just a bit more. Just my opinion, the difference is definitely subtle. Rather than investing in a DI, I'd personally get a preamp with a good DI out. Better...

Double Bass Amps with 10 MΩ input impedance

The only amps I'm aware of that have 10 MΩ input impedance are the Acoustic Image lineup. Plenty of amps are 1 MΩ and sound adequate, but having 10 MΩ is ideal and opens up the low end a bit more. Are there any other amps with an input impedance this high?

Double Bass Best way to form calluses with out bleeding/pain

I always tell people to just take it slow if they can. Avoid getting massive blisters and work up slowly. Play until you feel some discomfort and then stop. Work on your bow or something so you don't hurt yourself. Then repeat the next day and slowly build up over time.

    Double Bass Power Amps?

I have a question regarding power amps. Most of them I see are two channels. So people who use discrete power amps, what do you do with the second channel? Just leave it vacant or do you run it bridged for more power?

Double Bass Preamp recommendation for Realist Lifeline

I use a Fishman Platinum Stage and am very happy with it. It has 3-band EQ with sweepable mid and a low-cut filter as well as a DI out with a set volume so you can change the volume on the preamp without affecting the volume of the DI signal.

Double Bass where to buy strings online?

String Emporium has the lowest price I've found for my preferred set (Zyex light) as well as a few others I've used. Not sure if that's the case for all strings.

Double Bass Hearing yourself in loud situations?

Yeah, that's important to keep in mind especially if you have a heavier cab. Make sure whatever you're putting it on is sturdy. I've seen Ron Carter use a cabinet with the appropriate mechanisms to be attached to speaker stands. I don't remember what brand they were but that's an option (albeit...

Double Bass Would you let anyone sign your upright?

Not a snowball's chance in hell. I'm not big on autographs anyway but if I were going to ask for one maybe I'd have them sign a quiver or a bow case.

Double Bass Hearing yourself in loud situations?

Raise your amp up off the ground closer to your head or tilt it back (if it's small enough).

    Double Bass Pick up recommendations

Hm, that's a shame. I've heard the original Realist as well as the LifeLine, both sound decent. I prefer (and use) the original.

    Double Bass Power Amps?

It's quite a coincidence that this thread popped up as I was just thinking about this the other day. Since most amps tend to be voiced more for bass guitar than for upright bass, I was thinking it would make sense to plug into some sort of acoustic preamp and then plug that straight into a...

Double Bass Measuring an amp's input impedance?

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to measure an amp's input impedance. I have a multimeter and have used it to measure pickup resistances but I must admit I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing with it, I just followed instructions online.

Double Bass When to use pickup, when to use mic

Personally when playing live I just use a pickup into my amp. Then if the sound tech (if there is one) has a mic he/she wants to put on me, he/she can do so and send it straight to the FOH. Otherwise he/she can either run my pickup into a DI box or they can just use the DI output on my amp. I've...

Can we not have dating site ads?

It appears TalkBass uses Google AdSense which I don't believe gives them much choice over which ads are placed. It usually comes from Google tracking your search history. I do believe there's a way to disable personalized ads though somewhere in Google's settings.

I am a student at Michigan State University and can whole-heartedly suggest it. If Rodney Whitaker is not included in the 2 professors you've had lessons with, I highly recommend taking a lesson with him. Michigan State University has world-renown faculty: Rodney Whitaker (bass), Diego Rivera...

Double Bass AI Contra or GK MB 150 for doubling

Acoustic Image amps aren't designed to be played with electric instruments, although they can be. However, the GK is designed to be usable with either electric or acoustic bass. Therefore, I would choose the GK.

Double Bass Young players and the basics of the bass

Does your bridge have adjuster wheels? Regarding your bow hand, it may be that you haven't practiced enough with the bow yet and the muscles are weak or it may be that your grip is improper. When I played French bow, my problem was that I was not bending my thumb. This created a lot of tension...

Double Bass Realist on Plywood bass thru GkMBE112

I've had great success with a Realist on a plywood so it isn't impossible. Every bass is different though and you honestly just need to play and turn the knobs until the amp sounds like the bass. Not much more advice I can give other than the midrange typically needs to be cut a bit but not...

Double Bass Question on Pickup Impedance Matching

Typically I will ask that a mic be placed in front of my bass rather than or in addition to a DI being taken out of my amp. If there isn't a (decent) mic available, I'll ask that the DI-out on my amplifier be used rather than a box in front of it in the signal chain. This way I know that...

    Double Bass Yamahiko

All I know about the pickup is that Eddie Gomez uses it and Eddie Gomez, in my opinion, has sounded terrible ever since he started using an amp. He's sponsored by Yamahiko and did a video about it; seemed very awkward and like he was struggling to find anything positive to say other than "I...
