    Cab weight

Very interesting thread. There seem to be two different questions getting tossed about here 1. Do the Mesa/Subway cabs meet the standard of "ultra light" (whatever that might be)? 2. To what extent should weight be prioritized in choosing a cab? I have nothing to add about 1. Regarding 2, I...

    A GAS fueled DI dilemma

I'll play devil's advocate and throw out a different approach: how about a Radial JDI so you have a high quality passive DI in your kit? I too have tried many integrated pre/eq/DI units, and I'm back to: tone shaping independent of the DI, then that goes to the trusty Radial JDI to FOH. I can...

    NAD : Quilter V803

Congrats! The Quilter v803 sure gets a lot of love here on TB. What is interesting about this amp is, when the voice switch is set to "modern", the amp produces 800 watts into a 4 ohm load, but when the voice switch is set to "warm" or "qtube", the amp produces 500 watts into a 4 ohm...

Best Class D Head to use just as a power amp?

My preference has been ICEPower for the past 25 years because based on my history designing with their power modules, they are the gold standard in both performance and reliability. In fact, imo, it’s not even close. Looking back, pretty much everybody except Quilter’s in-house designs have...

Best Class D Head to use just as a power amp?

I've had good luck running a preamp into the back of various Mesa Subway amps, that whole family of products has been very reliable. Also some GK MB series amps worked pretty well but eventually I just hopped on a sale price for rack/Crown XLS 2502 scenario. With the Subway, Genzler and Berg...

Best Class D Head to use just as a power amp?

A good integration of any power amp takes a lot more effort to do we and also reliably. That’s one reason why there is so much difference between implementations. No, we are not looking to roll our own class D platform. I do have experience and did design an SMPS that was used commercially in...

Mistake made in haste Peavey MAX combo

I'm 74, and had a long life playing bass. I've owned so many amps, I literally have forgotten some. Ampeg B-15's, BT-15C, SVT, SUNN Coliseum, Marshall Major, Marshall 3540, Seymour Duncan, GK's Traynor, Hartke, SWR, Carvin, Pearce B2P, and a nice Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 that Andy serviced. Oh...

Mistake made in haste Peavey MAX combo

As a working musician, obviously I rely on dependable equipment. I have used over the years the Rumble 500, Rumble 800 head, Rumble 800 Combo and Rumble 100. I had hundreds of gigs through them playing 3-4 days a week. Indoor venues, outdoor venues, theaters........ They have been the most...

GK MB200 vs TC Electronic BQ500

Repair for either is simple: take board, throw in trash. Install new board. I haven’t had to do that. I have both. The MB200 has a bit too much hiss for my taste. The BQ500 is dead silent. Both have been extremely reliable. The MB has taken on the role of permanent backup amp as it’s...

I owned two Rumble combo amps. I had the 100 and the 800 watt 210 (not the 210 Stage). The baked in Rumble tone did not work well in some venues and is impossible to EQ out. I've since moved on to GK MB II amps and they work much better for me. I leave the contour and boost off because those...

The Warwick Gnome 600 is unarguably the best value Class D head in the world.

Have you considered that the demand is simply not there (maybe yet, that's TBD)? One thing that manufacturers who export to other regions need to account for is regulatory compliance. While it's possible (especially if you are small enough) without regulatory compliance to build and sell within...

Thanks. I've owned many over the years. One reason I've played Mesa in recent years is I feel they are more reliable. I'm hard on gear. Mesa customer service was always more responsive too. Not sure how it is these days as I haven't needed it in quite a while.

Tonehammer vs AG = Eden vs SWR?

No. To my ear, that’s 4 different tonal pallets. I appreciate the wizened perspective that engenders this question/comparison though!! The Eden is (imho) the most unique and recognizable of the 4. It’s mid-freq qualities just ARE that Eden sound, particularly when using Eden head and cabs. I...

Traynor SB500H Bass Head - Any Thoughts?

I've owned the SB500H for the last two years and it's been a good reliable workhorse. Not a lot of frills, but the simple 4-band EQ is effective and I like the blend of warmth and clarity with a fairly neutral character. I currently have it hooked up to my GK Neo IV 212 at my church, which...

I own/owned the followings and witnessed this : GK 400RB II : very punchy, powerful mids, too much hum and hiss, got rid of it. Mesa Subway D350 : sweet sounding, built to last forever but a boomy and undefined bass, got rid of it. Hartke LH 500 : sweet and powerful sound, deep and...

Thanks for the quick reply. I've heard good things online - I have played Hartke and GK in the past - I still have a Hartke HA4000 head - but I want something else that sounds a little more old-school - nice clear bass sound. The used Traynor SB500H looks like a good value.

Reminds me of a gk rb with its own touch and class d . I like it. It is easy to overheat if you are running it really hard though. I wish it had the more eq like this new 600 does. The interface worked well at first, but either my computer stopped being able to read it (driver issue?) Or...

New MESA BOOGIE release - MESA/Boogie Bass 800D - 800W Bass Amp Head

What about the Big Block 750? How popular were those? I see some on the used market and they're pricey. Around a grand is the avg asking price. There's one locally to me in a mom & pop shop and they want 900 for it. I can't see putting out that kind of money on a used amp that I may or may...

Help picking an amp (SVT-3 Pro, GK Fusion S, other?)

Hello folks! I've lurked for years but finally had a reason to post. I've played guitar for roughly 25 years, only once on stage, generally just home/pub sessions (when visiting family across The Pond), which has meant largely playing acoustic folk/folk-punk, even if I prefer an LP with...

Best Class D Head to use just as a power amp?

Icepower is a smart choice, don't get me wrong, always better than failing with one's own subpar design, and class D is certainly at a different level in terms of design complexity. My "objection", if you could even call it that, is more that companies that received praise for both their pre...

GK MB200 vs TC Electronic BQ500

Thanks for your replies! The main reason to consider the "upgrade" is that without adding any extra money I can replace a 15 year old amp with a new one with more than 2X the power. But my main conerns are: - Short and long term reliability and repairability. - If the difference in power is...

Hi, I have a used MB200 (12-15 years) and have the opportunity to sell it and buy a new BQ500. I don't know if it would be considered an upgrade, specially in terms of reliability and I don't have easy access to direct Warranty where I live, only a 30 day return period. Have been researching...

    Head and Cab advice

I'm assuming that the cab accounts for most of the tone that I'm looking for. Are the ampeg cabs more reliable than some of their pf heads, like the pf500. I was given the suggestion to get a used pf500 and ampeg 2x10 cab, but I've been reading quite a bit of negative comments on the pf500.

Andrew Goughe’s MTD with built-in Roland synth

Roland has moved in the last couple years to the GK-5, which is basically the same passive pickup part as the GK-3 but with an AD convertor in the pickup so that you can use a (unfortunately proprietary and expensive!) TRS data cable rather than the old 13-pin analog cable used on the GK-2 and...

Need advice for choosing a lightweight gig-worthy combo amp

I don’t know where Novi Sad is, and I don’t want a reliability debate either, but nearly all my many GK heads and combos for the last 20+ years have faulty or scratchy pots. And no, it’s not so simple to just spray Deox on them. The pots are cheap and poor quality.
