Neck pocket is slightly loose - what to do?

I had a similar problem. I put a thin wood shim on either side of the neck, secured by just a little wood glue to the sides of the neck pocket. That was in the 80s. Haven't had a problem with it since.

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

Hi folks! OK, I know I can't read through all these threads, and the search function is iffy, so I'll just ask...are there any necks available for a 34 to 32 Jazz conversion? Also...even more obscure ask...for a fretless? I'd like to keep playing fretless, but my hands are suddenly 72 years old...

    Missing Fret Dots

You could try this...I got this trick from Danny Gatton. I just glued flat back rhinestones from the craft store to the appropriate spots. The cut glass picks up any light in the place, and it's cheap and easy. Plus, you can remove them whenever you want. I've had these on for years.

    MM Stingray Passive-Active Switch

I was in the studio at rehearsal, and the battery in my 91 MM Stingray V started giving out. For some reason, neither I or anyone else had a 9-volt (Usually I always have some, but not this time). I took it out and found that not only does it play fine without a battery, but that big passive...

    Foot Adjustable OD/Distortion/Fuzz

A while back I read about Jack Casady having a separate amp that he set for distortion that he would control with a volume pedal, to bring in grit in different amounts at different times. It's a cool idea, but I'd like to use a pedal setup to achieve a similar thing. How would you do this? It...

Do you have a fear of breaking strings

I've broken two strings in my 55 years of playing. One was a new string that was obviously a factory problem, and the other was an upright gut string that just self-destructed in the middle of the night at home. So I'm not too worried. I do keep spare strings in my bag or case when I play, but...

What's To Know About Flatwound Strings For a 6 String Fretless Bass?

When I got my first Ibanez SRF706, it came with D'Addario Chromes, right from the factory. They sounded great, and felt pretty comfortable, too. Then, the preamp went fuutt! I returned it, and wound up buying a used one on Reverb, which came with DR Sunbeams. I like these even better...very...

Are you monogamous? Or do you play around?

I got a guitar shortly after I got a bass, at around 16. I wanted to write songs and understand harmony better. So I have guitars, basses, keyboards, some percussion instruments, accordions, an electric sitar and a banjolele. Whether I can play ANY of the above is open to argument.

Looking at getting a pedalboard but they feel like major rip-offs

I went to the ReCycle Center and bought a kitchen cabinet door for a few cents...a good-looking piece of wood. Took off the handle and the other stuff, bought some rubber feet from the hardware, found a bit of carpet scrap that velcro would stick to, and BAM, pedal board. I also bought an old...

    Pickup Replacement For Samick Royale

Just thinking about what I could do with this Samick Greg Bennett Royale bass...the acoustic tone is surprisingly good, but the pickups and the electronics are not doing it justice. The acoustic vibe sort of disappears with them. Any ideas on replacement pickups? It would be lovely if they were...

    5 String for $300-$500?

I've played the Schecter Diamond V, which is I believe the precursor to the Stiletto and really the same instrument, and the Ibanez SR506, which is one production level up from the SR406. I liked the Schecter, its build was very nice and it felt great to play. I wasn't so crazy about how the...

    Tube Pedal Suggestions?

Curious about pedals and preamps that incorporate tubes. I know nothing about anything. Just hoping some of you more experienced folks have some feedback about what's available and what they're like. Thanks!

Five- or Six-String Players: How much would you miss your low B, really?

A lot of it depends on what kind of music I'm playing. I do a lot of Swing gigs on upright, and it's more comfortable for me to do slap funk on a 4 string electric. But I'm also in bands where the guitarist uses open tunings and that low D (as well as the notes below it on the B string) is...

Double Bass Silver Slap tension but bowable?

I use the Spiro Solos on one bass and the Evah Slaps on another. I'd think the Evahs might be just the thing...slightly lower tension, more of a dark, gut-like attack, but totally bowable. I'm using just the E and A now with gut D and G, but I've used the full synthetic set before, and you might...

Double Bass Finding a 1/2 size bass top

I don't know if I'd play it or not. My experience on 1/2 sizes is limited and the ones I've played didn't impress me with their E string, but that could be different on a different bass. I might sell it or give it to a deserving student. I know very little about bass luthiery, but it could be a...

Double Bass Finding a 1/2 size bass top

Some years ago I somehow got ahold of a 1/2 size bass body...just an inexpensive student model. The top had been destroyed. I have no idea where I could get a replacement. I already have playable uprights...I could also make the bass into a bookshelf or a liquor cabinet, but it might be nice to...

    Do you use your B?

I use the B string when I have one (sometimes I'm playing a 4 string, sometimes a 5 or 6...or even 7). It just opens up a lot of possibilities for me, and makes some passages a lot easier. And I've played my 6 string in a lot of bands that played very traditional 30's, 40's and 50's music. I got...

    Ibanez SRX705...What's WITH that bridge?

I've had a few 34" 5s and 6s, and really had no problems with the B strings myself. Changing the saddles is an interesting idea.

    Ibanez SRX705...What's WITH that bridge?

I've only encountered one, but it had the same problem. It's a shame, too. The rest of that instrument is really well crafted. But there's nothing that I could find that would work as a replacement...that darn bridge is too big.

    Ibanez SRX705...What's WITH that bridge?

Anybody have any experience with these basses and their bizarre bridge? What were they thinking and why, I wonder? They're lovely basses aside from that, but the one-screw-per-polepiece is just such a goofy idea. I'd love to hear from anyone who's owned one, and get their feedback.

Mystery bass on ebay - Alembic style?

I actually own one of these that looks very close to this one. They're beautiful basses and sound fantastic...the electronics are more limited in tone than Alembics are, but all the tones are useful and there's plenty of variation. Plus they're a dream to play.

Mystery bass on ebay - Alembic style?

I like strange and goofy basses, but not for this much. Especially when the work looks this rough. If you want something more Alembic-y for a lot less, I'd suggest this: Kawai Alembic Style Bass | eBay

The wife says don't sell this one!

One more vote (as if you needed more!) to keep that bass. Your wife feels strongly about you keeping a bass. This is a rare and lovely thing. Respect her wishes. You can always find a nice place to keep it. You MAY even start to use it...I went to 5 strings for some practical reasons recently...

"Learn to sing to increase your opportunities"

The thing is, everybody has the ability to sing. We all have the same vocal mechanism, basically, unless you have problems with your vocal chords or palate or something. Some may be blessed with more range, but anyone can learn to sing, and to sing better. Some people start early and do it...

Eden ex 112 4 ohm Question

At the price I'm looking at, it might just be worth it to get it anyway and keep it around for Blues and Jazz shows in small clubs...it sure seems loud enough for that! And I DO have other cabs for larger venues and louder gigs. I just wonder why they manufactured these as 4 ohm cabs in the...

I'm looking at one of the Eden ex112 4 ohm cabs, and I'm hoping for some advice. This thing sounds great and the price is right but I'm wondering if I can pair it with any other cab...if I got another of these, it would take the load down to 2 ohms, right? The two heads I'd be pairing it with...

    Stage injuries

One was on a stage at a local bar...stage was about 5 feet high. I had a pint of beer in my hand and I slipped offstage. The beer hit the floor before I did...and I put out my hands to break my fall. I had a LOT of broken glass stuck in me. I was picking it out of my palms for weeks.
