    Shipping help/crushing my dreams

Before I get bombarded with "use the search" comments, I've looked. I just gotta simple question Im moving from one side of the country to the other. Ive got a nice hard shell case and its set up with low tension thomastik flats. Is it necessary to loosen the strings? I think I know the...

    NBD: JV Precision

I was just as surprised and then some. I'm not sure if its just mine or a general characteristic. I don't mind a heavier bass but, I once owned a tele that weighed 12 pounds and that was my limit :blackeye:

    NBD: JV Precision

Plays great. If you ever get a chance to pick one up I highly recommend them. The neck is really nice, a bit thinner than I was expecting but its still wide enough at the nut to not feel wimpy. definitely on the heavier side, weighing in at 10.1 pounds. The main thing I was surprised at was...

    Thomastik Flats, Inconsistent?

No crack! Just a bad combination of being proactive enough to lube the nut with graphite before stringing it, then too lazy to wipe away the excess.

    Thomastik Flats, Inconsistent?

This is what I'm experiencing. I'm no chump on bass and have been playing flats longer than a lot of guys have been alive, but even knowing theres a "break in" period, unless said "break in" is so extreme the string just randomly dies I cannot fathom them being even. Last night I had a big band...

    Thomastik Flats, Inconsistent?

Nope  But I was surprised to see them at my local store and figured they had a good reputation so I would give them a shot.

    Thomastik Flats, Inconsistent?

Thanks for the response. I'm new to TI's and they definitely sound A LOT brighter new than La Bellas. Comforting to know they will even out.

heres a Photo if that helps. Dont be afraid to tell me this is normal and I'm stupid, thats good news. Something just doesnt seem right.

    Thomastik Flats, Inconsistent?

So I recently purchased some JF344's as a change to my usual light gauge la bellas. However I noticed that the E and A strings are significantly brighter than the D and G strings. I know there is a break in period for flats, but all things considered they are still significantly brighter. Is...

Would you buy this $400 American Standard P-Bass

I'd 100% buy it even at 400. I if it's working fine why not, plus you get the cool story for free.

    Old Strings

If you want to get overly pedantic they are half rounds as came standard on sting rays at the time and which he never changed. Bernard Edwards himself confirmed this. "The Bass Player article on Le Freak a few years ago had Nile Rodgers confirming that, for that particular recording, Bernard...

    Old Strings

I don't replace mine often, every 5 years or until it breaks. As long as you keep em clean they're fine. Apparently Bernard Edwards never replaced his strings either.

To compress, or not to compress, that is the question

Compression is great if used effectively. A general rule. You shouldn't notice it's there but notice when it's gone. Just enough to keep it tasty.

I suck at dialing in my own gear

As someone who's a bassist and in early days did a lot of front of house work, I find the problem is most bass players are scared of the treble. Makes a huge difference up front without sounding tinny as long as your bass and mids are still there.

How did you pick up bass stories?

played Piano and had a theory teacher from a youngster This enabled me with the knowledge to realise that everything revolves around the bass. I generally believe everything revolves around me. I promptly bought a bass.

How do you see yourself as a bassist?

I see myself as "the only bass player that can read within 50km so I get all the gigs guy" Mr. Fundamentals.

    P Bass Tone Knob

Did a Motown tribute gig in April and took a photo of my settings I got the tone so close, IMO for best results, Bass: old flats is a must, tone rolled all the way on Amp: bass at about 2 oclock, low mids slightly boosted and treble slightly cut. Also if it has a gain option, roll about 1/4...

ME  So I decided I'd heard enough great reviews about the Ampeg Portaflex Series and figured I could use another amp as an alternative to my TC Electronic. What Bass Am I?

Dude sounds like you need a Tony Franklin. P pickup at the neck and a J in the bridge and if you go the fretless route they do standard fretless models too.

    Bass chorus?

IF YOU CAN FIND ONE, I use a PSK CR-1, which are meant to be exact replicas of the BOSS CE-2's. I picked one up for about 30 bux and couldn't tell the difference between that and my actual CE-2. Invalid Link Removed

Relic or Road Worn....Like it? Hate it?

All genuine. I do admit the nitro relicing does look a lot nicer than the gloop/chipping of poly...however it does relic.

Relic or Road Worn....Like it? Hate it?

I have an 11 year old poly bass that has relicing...I don't get the whole poly doesn't relic shabang. It does, just not in the way the old nitro does. I did tour with it pretty heavily but, so YMMV...ill try snap a quick photo

Relic or Road Worn....Like it? Hate it?

I'm not a fan but at the end of the day its personal preference, I can see why people like it. IMO though, when I see the bass in 30 years and see all the scratches and dings it has that i've made...theres something in that that cant be replicated.

Do You Think You Need To Be Great At Improvising To Be A Great Bassist?

is da pope a catholic  improvisation is really a measure of raw musicality, so it only makes sense that you have to be good at improvising. We're not talking lightning solos with non diatonic notes and foreign modes (although it helps) but the ability to get a lead sheet and play is a...
