I agree that it totally depends on what you are plugging it in to. Gotta have the high input impedance. Nuanced filtering also helps. Blended with the mag pickup works great for me, for a folk/country/Americana vibe.

Depending on the song, if I want to “drive” the beat, I play slightly ahead— timing it as if I were trying to slip a piece of paper between the beater of the kick pedal and the surface of the drum at the last possible moment.
