Double Bass "The Test"... What To Expect ?

A good friend of mine, a professional concert musician and a luthier, sent me three sets of strings after I told him I was thinking of looking for a different "jazz" sound for my Upton hybrid Bohemian. I am not (but would like at least to get into) an arco player. I love the sound of mt...

    Finally Got My Dimension

It arrived today, a 4HH Dimension with a rosewood fretboard... beautiful... light, and with the action a little low for my taste ( a little fret buzz)... it went straight from my dealer to my car to a gig... the first note played on the thing was live with a 15 piece band in front of an...

What With The Fender "Company" ?

I've been a fan of Fender and owned their basses since 1964. I had a chance to play (and loved) the new "HH" Dimension bass 4-string so I ordered one through a very fine local dealer back in November... scheduled arrival date was end of January... so I knew I had to wait ! Now I find that...

I had Bill make this for me in the past year... I actually had to pleasure of hanging out with him one night when we went through his shop and went over what I wanted... pretty cool. I've got 3 nice basses... each in to $1500+ range... and as I only travel locally I don't really care about using my bass cases... just a "gig" bag. Well, for Christmas I'm treating myself to a new one. I've had "fur-lined" Levi cases before but decided to go with a nice new Levi "Leather"...

Three Of My Favorite Basses For Sale... Bass #1... my "Wendler" Electro-Acoustic

Sometimes it's time to re-shuffle the deck... this time around I'm offering up 3 of my very favorite basses. Two are made by Bill Nash, one by Dave Wendler. I almost exclusively use basses that are made by folks I can get to know, not just something mass marketed and made in parts "unknown"...

Double Bass I've gotten so comfortable playing my UB that "slab" playing is now a problem...

Between fingering positions and no "D" reference staring down a chart while playing a slab has been a lot of hit-and-miss.... a new group I'm with wants only slab so I figure I'd better re-learn the thing... any ideas on how to "cheat" to help with the transitions between the two ? Art Fahie...

Lynn.... How do you balance your sound...

When playing in a big band situation. Do you keep your bass more predominant than your amp or do you run into times that your amp becomes the prevelant source of sound ? Your Diane Schuur album is one I always recommend to anyone trying to understand the mechanics and sounds of a big band...

    Phil Jones 6-pak

I'm at the point of needing something "less"... less volume, less weight etc. This amp is in GREAT condition, it generally was used around the house. As I live in Maine and this thing would be a bear to ship so a local (northeastern) sale would be best. I'd like to see about $1200 out of it...

    Ergo 4-string for sale

Double Bass A Great Application For The "iPhone" & others too !

Many of you may know about this, but I just discovered it this morning. As a guy who's "jazz-prone" (but who doesn;t get to play very often) I often (most of the time) can't recall changes to many tunes and while I can feel my way around much of the time... some of the time I wind up in...

    Double Bass When it comes to EUB's.... what's "cheap",what's "mid-priced", & what's "high-end" ?

When it comes to prices what PRICE ranges constitute low-mid-and high-end EUB's ? I know the Ergo is a "value" priced instrument... when does the "price-ometer" click into the "mid" & "high-end" price ranges. I'm always curious as to how you other folks judge this.

Double Bass I love my Ergo... but...

I've got to admit I was impressed by the sound clips and the attitude of John Knudsen over at the Knudson Luthiery... other was known as the home of the "Messenger" bass...so I ordered one with the 'EXTRA SPECIAL SUPER DUPER PICK-UP" (which I can't remember the name of)... at any rate I think it...

    Double Bass A jazz-growl-sustain for $2,000-$4,000 ?

Living in Maine I get NO exposure to upright basses... I've spent my life playing electrics and have loved my experience with my Ergo EUB so much that: 1) I no longer touch my bass "guitars" 2) I'm thinking along the lines of a "real" acoustic. I've been "surfing" & have found lots of...

    Strings for a '57P Nash

I just picked-up a Nash '57P... it has Lindy Fralin pups. The strings are roundwound, back in the 60's my original P's had flats. Admittedly I'm less than comfortable with the rounds on this new piece. Any suggestions?... I lean towards flats but am open to any ideas. Thanks. Art Maine

The Fender American Standard... is it just me ?

I tried one today at GC... I grew up in the 60's playing Precisions (about 3 of them, I could could trade them for a BMW today !)... and although I haven't had an "original" in my hands for years the "new" version seemed light, I didn't much care about the string-thru-body feature, and the...
