    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

Well, I tried a set of KZ ZAX and wasn’t keen on them to be honest and I sold them on. The bass guitar wasn’t distinct enough IMHO, too deep with not enough note clarity. I ordered a set of ZS12 Pro X’s which are a lot better for bass guitar, and more recently a set of KZ ZAR’s which was my...

    Wireless Bass Frequency Response

Perhaps the wired option sounded ‘better’ as you don’t get any white noise or other artefacts?

The most expensive and the least expensive bass that has impressed you the most.

My most expensive bass I ever bought was a left handed 2014 Rickenbacker 4003 which I paid £2,400 for. Beautiful bass but I didn’t get on with the neck on it, I foolishly part/ex’ed my 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 for it, what a mistake that was!

The most expensive and the least expensive bass that has impressed you the most.

My Vintage VJ74 Jazz Bass. I’ve owned 1 x Fender USA Pro Jazz Bass, 1 x Fender USA Standard Jazz Bass and 1 x Fender Mexican Jazz Bass, loved the necks on the USA Fenders but never truly found a sound I was happy with on any of them (even with swapping out pickups). Being a lefty I was unable...

    Wireless Bass Frequency Response

I was always led to understand that with wireless audio the nature of the beast is that you will always lose some bass. You can test this for yourself by A/B’ing your wireless IEM system by inserting your earbuds directly to the headphone socket on your wireless transmitter. You may be...

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

I use Comply tips on my earbuds, for some reason they don’t seem to be as good as they were several years ago, that is in their feel and how quickly they now re-form their shape, you have to be very quick now in getting them in your ears. Having said that they are still quite good, but I find...

How are IEM mixes done for a silent stage?

I use this same app as well, for some reason though it drains the battery in my IPad Pro really quickly (others have reported the same issue). At one gig I remember it didn’t last the whole night! I’m having to use a battery Power Bank now to make sure it doesn’t run out of power. Great app though.

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

I decided on giving the KZ ZAX’s a try, for the majority they do seem to have fairly good reviews but I have read a few less favourable one’s whereby they’ve said that the bass can be a bit boomy and uncontrollable. I’m getting them from Aliexpress so they’re at a very good price, if they don’t...

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

Sometimes I find I have to sort of twist the earbuds slightly to get a better seal.

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

I agree, I use Comply Foam Tips, the stock silicone one’s aren’t too bad but not as good as memory foam tips.

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

I do BV’s/harmonies so the IEM’s are important to myself as well, plus I do need to hear the lead vocalist clearly as well. I have 2 pairs of KZ ZS10 Pro’s, the one’s I’m using at the moment are the first pair that I bought, however I accidentally dropped them on the floor some time back and I...

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

I might check those out thanks, but I’d sort of narrowed it down to those models I’ve listed and that was on the back of reading many reviews on KZ Earphones. I agree with you on the ZS10 Pro’s - very good earphones but as you say the treble can be a touch too bright for my ears.

    KZ IEM UPGRADE?

Hi guys, I’ve been using KZ ZS10 PRO earphones as my live IEM’s for a few years now, I’ve been quite happy with them but I have some spare dosh and am thinking of upgrading them (to another KZ product). I’ve been looking at a few different models, namely the KS12 PRO X, KS12 PRO 2, KZ ZAR and...

East J-Retro 01 on Vintage Reissued JM74 Bass

Yeah I’ve had a John East Pre before (Musicman type) and it was brilliant. The JM74 does actually have a nice tone to it but I’ve heard great reviews on the J Retro and think it might take the bass to another level, and I do like active basses as a preference. Yeah I’ll try and find out some...

East J-Retro 01 on Vintage Reissued JM74 Bass

I’m thinking of fitting a John East J-Retro 01 system on my Vintage Reissued JM74 Bass, does anyone know if the chrome control plate is identical to the John East one and also whether the system will drop in the control cavity without modification? The preamp houses the 9 volt battery and I...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Has anyone experienced any problems with the bridge saddles on their Z3/Z7? I keep having to re-adjust the string height on the G and D strings, it seems like the screws aren’t holding the saddles securely and the saddles are dropping down slightly on the screws? I had the same issue with a...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

With the larger pole pieces my Z7 seems more ‘complete’ now if that makes sense, and with the extra volume on the upgraded neck pickup it’s sounding now like how it was meant to.
  19. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Hope it works ok, the stock pickup sounds nice so it would be great if it does the trick. The new pickup is probably the ideal solution though.
  20. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Yeah, I did the tone cap mod on my P7, it does affect the active tone as well though? It wasn’t in parallel though, I replaced the existing tone cap.

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Yes it’s worth giving Anderton’s a try. Regarding the large pole Delano pickups, I had them on my Sandberg JM4. I must say (at the time) I hardly used the neck pickup I didn’t like it that much (on that bass anyway) and I used to have the pickups balanced just favouring the large MM shaped...
  22. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Here’s a photo of the underside of the stock neck pickup, I hope it’s of use to you. I would try Anderton’s as it was my understanding that they may have had a few extra of the upgraded pickup arrive with mine. Underneath the pickup is a neoprene or similar material foam pad which is to help...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

The gig went well with the Z7-5, huge noticeable difference in the usability of the neck pickup. Nice Jazz bass tone and a very nice blended pickup tone of the 2 pickups. What I did notice is that only a slight deviation from the centre detente in either direction and you seem to quickly lose...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

With both pickups set at the same height they are pretty much equal now in volume, perhaps the new upgrade neck pickup needs to be fractionally higher but it is definitely louder than the stock pickup, the actual pickup is only measuring 5.5 ohms but those large diameter poles make a difference...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

No, it’s just the angle of the camera, they do all line up. See original photo on this posting.
  26. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Yes it definitely looks better with the matching pole pieces. It looks now like it has been designed with the bass and not a mis-match. A good alternative would have been for them to have fitted the Z7’s with 2 x MM style pickups like on some of the EBMM models. Perhaps this style will come on...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

I hope the upside down lettering on the neck pickup is ok, I’m not noticing it too much so far myself.

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Here’s a photo of my Z7-5 with the new upgraded pickup which I fitted tonight.
  29. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

I think it’s probably because it is for a right handed Z7 and not a left handed model like mine, but unfortunately it’s the only one I was able to obtain. If you look at a photo of the right handed Z7’s you’ll see what I mean.

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Well the pickup has arrived for my Z7-5, hoping to get the chance to install it this evening! I’m not sure how powerful this pickup is going to be as it is only measuring at 5.5 ohms, hopefully those large diameter pole pieces will have an impact? I can’t see Sire upgrading the neck pickup...

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Yes, as far as I am aware this will be fitted on all Z7’s on 3rd quarter deliveries and onwards. I haven’t seen anything from Sire that confirms this yet, the only one I’ve seen was fitted on the blue sparkle model at NAMM 2025 earlier this year. I don’t know what else the next gen Z7’s may...
  32. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Will do, hopefully it will arrive tomorrow or Wednesday. AFAIK all of the Z7’s will be supplied with this pickup not just the blue sparkle one.
  33. Baker69

    NBD: Sire Z7-5

Waiting eagerly to fit this on my Sire Z7-5 Lefty! It’s a replacement neck pickup which Sire should be fitting on the next deliveries of Z7’s. It has the large diameter pole pieces to match the MM bridge pickup, hopefully it will be a lot more powerful than the stock Jazz style pickup supplied...

A question for the IEM / Sound experts.

Like I was saying the objective (well mine anyway) is not to get a full FOH mix through IEM’s and if you look at video tutorials on YouTube they say to start with nothing and just to gradually introduce only the instruments/vocals you really need for your IEM mix. I suppose a lot depends on how...

A question for the IEM / Sound experts.

I believe the main objective from a bass player’s point of view is to get a good sound for hearing your own instrument, the object of an IEM mix isn’t to get a CD quality mix of the whole band through them which is what a lot of guys seem to want to achieve? I concentrate on my bass sound and...

How about the Mike Lull Jazz bass with the Thunderbird pickups, they sound real good.

Trending? How many of us have gone totally amp-free?

It can be very difficult to give up using an amp on stage, especially if you’ve been playing for quite some years like myself. We have memories of buying our first amp/speaker cab/combo, all the subsequent years of upgrading our equipment, trading, buying, looking at reviews for the next best...

    Nooo,, a jazz bass?

If you’ve already owned and sold 2 jazz basses then they are probably not for you. I assume they were all Fender Jazz’s, if so and you still have GAS for a Jazz then why not try a different manufacturer eg Sire, their V7’s are really good and very popular.

Trending? How many of us have gone totally amp-free?

As mentioned in an earlier posting the main reason my band went to IEM’s originally was for ear protection. This led to our keyboard player immediately going ampless and I have experimented both with amp + IEM’s and ampless + IEM’s, at the moment I am still using an amp on stage. Unfortunately...
