Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I will unashamedly plug my band here, but for good reason. The stoner/doom bassists threads is where I first picked up on the bonecrushingly beautiful side of music. So without you guys, this album would never have come to be. Fire Down Below - Viper Vixen Goddes Saint on bandcamp...

    NBD - something unique

hey all I recently added this unique instrument to my little collection, and since it's something special I thought I'd share it over here. Made in The Netherlands by Jelle Vissers (JeVi basses on facebook), this is The Purpleheart. This bass was not commissioned, Jelle built it mostly as a...

    cab + loadbox?

Hey guys, need some wisdom here. I'm about to get an Ampeg SVT-Classic, which, as you all know, will run at 4 or 2 ohm. I currently have 2 Mesa ph212 cabs, each cab is 8 ohm. So as long as I run both cabs, everything is just fine. Problem is that for smaller gigs, I'd like to be able to run just...

    Fuzz for Doom Metal

I think everyone needs at least one Big Muff style fuzz, my favourites: Earthbound Audio Supercollider, Blackout Effectors Musket, Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh, Earthquaker Devices Hoof. And when it's time for a different flavour: a Maestro Brassmaster style fuzz.

    ric-o-sound problem

yes, volume knobs were maxed and the pickup selector was in the middle position. I might try to take a look at the stereo out jack.

Thanks for the hint, but that is what I've been doing, stereo out jack only. Not both outputs.

    ric-o-sound problem

hi, need some Talkbass wisdom here. I recently bought a late 90's Rickenbacker 4003 bass. I tried using the ric-o-sound option, but something 's not working right. This was the setup: Rick 4003, stereo output, using Y-cable (1 stereo to 2 mono plugs) plug A -> Ampeg rig plug B -> Aguilar...

Stoner/DOOM Bassists Part 83: WHAT YEAR IS IT?

Just listened to Bongripper's Satan Worshipping Doom for the first time. F*ck my eardrums. Awesome job, Ron! First record that impressed me since I discovered Ufomammut. Only point of criticism is that I don't really like sound of the kick drum too much. How do the guitar players manage tuning...

    Ric 4001 or 4003 ?

Thanks for the opinions. The '73 4001 doesn't have the checkerboard binding, it does have the horseshoe pickup. I was leaning towards the 4003 from the start, even more so now. Just too bad it isn't jetglo. Aesthetics matter :-)

    Ric 4001 or 4003 ?

Thanks for the replies! The push/pull pot on the 4003 was added afterwards. The 4001 is a jetglo (black), the 4003 is mapleglo (natural). The case of the 4001 is in a silver color. I won't be able to test them side by side, nor even on the same amp, so an honest direct comparison will be...

    Ric 4001 or 4003 ?

Hey all Need some input here: I want to buy a Rickenbacker bass. I was on the lookout for either a 4001 or a 4003. Now I have got a lead on one of each. I could either get a '73 jetglo 4001 in great condition, with original (silver colored) case for €1800. Love its looks. Or I could get...

    Mesa 2x12 - hmmm

I used to have the 410hlf, way too boomy for my taste. So I started looking for some other cab with more definition and ended up with the Mesa ph212. I would never ever go back! The mesa has a nice natural mid bump, articulate lows and plenty of highs (I turn the tweeter completely of 95% of the...

Stoner/Doom Bassists: 76 - 6 Foot Tall Pink Fuzzy Moose

So, anyone wanna listen to 2 songs by my band? Not doom, but stoner-ish. Recorded with a simple Tascam DR-07 at rehearsal. Tell me what you like, what you hate, rip it up if you have to. https://soundcloud.com/bert-wynsberghe

Stoner/Doom Bassists: 76 - 6 Foot Tall Pink Fuzzy Moose

I think it's safe to say that strings, pickups and wiring outweigh fretboard wood by far. I do not hear a difference, but many say they do. The explanation of the 'oily pores' sounds flakey to me, but hey, I'm no expert.

    Should I be giving lessons?

I recently started giving lessons to beginners. Basic stuff, tips and tricks, very basic theory. So far everything's going well, after every session I ask if they thought the lesson was useful and the answer's always been positive.

And to think I would probably never have heard of them if it weren't for the stoner/doom threads. I thank thee all for enlightening me. Saw them on Saturday and I'd go see them again next Friday, but I've got a gig myself.

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

That first part of dododo, that's pretty close to how my bird sounds, and I consider that 'dark'. The tapping piece sounded much crispier, I don't think I could get that tone out of my bird.

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

Just a quick report to share my findings: the fresh strings and the 'presence' knob on the back of my amp did have an impact on the tone of my bird, providing it with just a bit of zing. Still not enough for my liking, though. I'm gonna start saving up for a pair of Thunderbuckers ...

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

Bright switch! I totally forgot that my V4bh has that, gonna switch it on tonight! I do play a P now as my main instrument, but everytime I take the Bird of its hook I sigh: 'why can't you just sound like the P, you're so purdy and your neck feels so great in my hands'. What I've got now...

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

Yeah I know. While the Fenders sound good with 'everything at noon', I usually cut some bass, boost the treble and add a bit of high mids for the Bird. Still too dark for what I'm after, though.

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

Thanks for all the input, guys! Last night I put new d'Addario Prosteels on (very bright strings) and messed around with the pickups (bridge pickup almost as high as it can, neck pickup quite a bit lower). Tonight it will be put to the test. (My signal runs through a buffered pedalboard, but...

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

I know it's kinda going against its nature. I was happy with it for a few years, but now I wish I could combine the sound of my P/J with the looks and feel of the Tbird. Best of both worlds, you know.

Gibson T-bird IV too dark. tone pot?

hi all I have a 2008 Gibson T-bird, and while I love its look and feel, I find the tone to be just way too dark. In comparison to my Fender P an J, it's like it puts out no highs at all and has a huge low mids bump. I tried swapping the 250k tone pot for a 500k, figuring that it would let...

    2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue

The new amp looks very nice, when it hits stores over here in Europe I'm gonna haul my V4bh to the shop to A/B them. If anyone else is planning to do the same or even make some recordings of it, I'd love to hear! I don't understand the comments of the V4bh being 'weak', though. I can never...

    decent distortion pedal

Out of the 3 pedals you mention, the Bad Monkey would probably do best for low and medium gain overdrive/distortion. If you got more cash to spend, here are some more suggestions: Fuzzrocious Rat Tail or OSD, Aguilar Agro, Darglass B3K, Zvex Basstortion, EBS Multidrive, Wampler Euphoria.

    Fuzzrocious Club - Sextuplet

Ryan, I was just wondering: Could you make a RT to have a second tone pot + footswitch, just like it's possible to have a second gain pot + footswitch? I love having a 2nd gain switch, but sometimes I'd like to have instant acces to another tone setting as well ...

Bleakest, saddest song you've ever heard?

Friend of Ours by Elbow. An ode to Manchester songwriter Brian Glancy, a friend of the band who suddenly died of illness. I don't know how Guy Garvey does it, but every time the vocals come in I feel like crying.

    overdrive/fuzz quest part 2

John, was moddig the Stone Grey Distortion a lot of work? I've got one and I barely use it because of the low end loss, even on guitar. Do you think modding a stock unit is practically possible?
