Double Bass Lingsma EUB: Inovative Design

Deceptive video of the resonance block. They're using a rolling shutter, like on those videos that show bass strings vibrating with big sine-waves going up and down. The block may indeed resonate, but not at all like the video shows.

    Double Bass Entry Level EUB

Do you want to play it like a bass guitar, or learn to play it like (and start to sound like) an upright? And if you want to "get into" upright, factor in some lessons to learn proper technique, or it'll just be a prop that looks cool, but sounds like a fretless slab.

Double Bass Build your own bass?

To be fair, I'm guessing English isn't his first language. I'm pretty sure my Mandarin wouldn't come across so clearly... ;)

Double Bass Help me Pick: Fully Carved Gollihur Estle Louis, or KC Strings Krutz 300 Fully Carved

If you're a newbie, buying a used bass from a private seller can be filled with pitfalls, as you don't know what you're looking at or even how to play. Sometimes it makes good sense to get a new instrument that you know has been set up well and has people that stand behind what they sell you...

Double Bass Cheapest EUB with same neck dimensions as DB

I needed this and couldn't find what I wanted, so I built my own to match the neck of my Upton Standard Lam. Feels great! Been thinking of making another, but starting with one of those Chinese kits you find on ebay. For around $210, you get a maple neck (that needs to be finished), ebony...

Double Bass What's louder, the cello or the double bass?

Depends on if you're measuring it with ears or instruments! Humans don't hear low frequencies that well (at a certain point, we feel them more than hear them), but I bet an elephant would give the prize to the DB hands down!

Double Bass Is a 5/8 Too Small for Me

One shouldn't make assumptions, but one can make generalizations... It's all physics in the end!

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

Had some real, honest to goodness bassists play it today when I was having my first lesson in a long time. Awesome feedback and pushes for me to make more, but I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY! Psyched to hear pros say they'd gig with it as is... :D

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

Finally added a pickup. A cheapie strip from e-bay that I redid the bridge for so that the entire .375" wide strip was covered. To my ears, it sounds pretty good, but if my ears were as good as my hands, I'd have been practicing more and building less... Anyway, this video has me muddily...

    Double Bass Transitioning to EUB

Though you won't get a UB sound with an EUB (you'll get an EUB sound), you'll get closest to it if you play it like a UB, so set up some lessons and play with your arm, not your fingers!

    Double Bass piezo response adjustment

I've got a pickup I like. I'm just trying to reduce the response on the higher end.

    Double Bass piezo response adjustment

This pic doesn't show the pickup, but the bridge is maybe .75" high on the ends and 1.25" in the middle.

    Double Bass piezo response adjustment

I'm working to add a piezo strip under my solid bridge. In general, the sound is good, and it's built so that the E end is more sensitive than the G (you can really tell the difference if the strip is flipped). My problem is that the G side is still a little loud and I'd like to even it out via...

Double Bass Power-free practice amp (don't laugh!)

Okay, go ahead and laugh. The whole reason I built my Bombasstick was to be able to practice without power, and switching from cheapie ebay strings to 1/2 size Corellis helped a lot with the sound quality, but not necessarily the quantity. On a lark, I tried out something silly, and a bit...

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

This was the piece that used to be behind the round plug in the headstock. The strings passed though, and the allen nuts up top clamped down on the strings. Unfortunately, sometimes they broke part of the string and I'd hear the note getting flatter and flatter as I tuned. Cha-ching!!

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

The screw-clamp method that I was using to hold the strings up top was damaging/breaking the ebay cheapos I was playing with. I had to trim the balls off the strings in order to get them in. I even had to shorten the ends, snipping the silks, and the strings would lose their wrap tension...

    Double Bass Changing the length

I just read an old post about someone havinging the length of their bass changed from 44" to 42.75". How does one do this without shortening the neck, since the length is determined by the distance from nut to bridge and the bridge is centered on the f-holes?

Double Bass String ID help (with pics)

That's what I'm thinking, too, after seeing pictures of their balls and silk length. (where else can I utter that phrase legitimately?) Even the felt dampers look right. Good price here ($86.53 to my door): [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Not sure what the difference between the...

Double Bass String ID help (with pics)

These strings came on a secondhand Ergo I bought. I like their unamplified tone and want to get a set for my home-made practice bass. Any ideas? Along with the info in the pics, the length between the silks on the A string is around 50", which is 7" shorter than my current cheapo strings...

Double Bass Ergo megathread part II

I picked up a used Ergo4 a couple months ago as I was finishing a build on a stick-bass with an acoustic chamber to use as an unamplified practice instrument. The cheapie "Patrick" strings that I got off of ebay for $22 sound horrendously twangy and open, while the ones on the Ergo have a dull...

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

Thanks for the generous replies! Yes, the chamber is hollow, with maybe 120 cubic inches or so. The sound is nothing to write home about, but the action is respectable. It feels properly set-up. The only way I'd be able to tell how much of the twanginess of the sound is from the bass or the...

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

http://soundcloud.com/jayscheuerle/bombasstick-test Recorded on my cell-phone, wedged between the bottom supports, facing upwards. Had to normalize it in Audacity as it was quite quiet. Didn't quite pick up the twanginess that I hear. Seems like it will work well for its purpose.

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

You wouldn't think this thing would weigh much, but when you're using your left hand to support and stabilize it, it adds up quickly. Needed to come up with a rest that was removeable and small enough to transport in the bag with the bass. Used 3/8" aluminum stock, brute-forced into the right...

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

Total would have been around $100-$150 if I didn't run through 3 sets of strings trying to work friction/clamping issues out. Fortunately, I was using $22/set "Patrick" strings from ebay. Also, I had some knobs and things lying around. I appreciate the "expertise" comment, but I had no idea...

    Double Bass Breaking the rules!

Just finished this upright bass project. The concept was that I wanted something portable that I could take out of town and get some practice in without needing to amplify. The small acoustic chamber gives just enough sound for that. Also, I wanted to duplicate the shape of the neck and...
