Post pics of your bass(es) and give a speech about them!

Hi everyone! This thread I made is dedicated to our own personal possessions, something we all cherish more than just about most things.... Our basses! Now obviously, as important as our instruments are to us, there's no denying that when it comes to our "sound", we must factor in all...

    Paul D'Amour's tone

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, you were telling the truth all along seang15! I know it's silly, replying to a thread like this a year after the fact, but lately some pictures have surfaced on the internet of Paul D'Amour with his new band Lesser Key, and in those photos you can clearly see him...

What's your favorite "the bass playing on this album is awesome" album?

Primus - Frizzle Fry Not only is the bass is so rich sounding that listening to it becomes more addicting than injecting crystal meth into your eyeball (disclaimer- I don't use crystal meth or any real drugs for that matter), but Les Claypool is also an aficionado when it comes to his...

    Worst Bands Ever

Anything that sounds remotely similar to Limp Bizkit is what I consider to be "music that I hate the most" That band butchers music worse than the way they spelled the word "biscuit"

Here's song I covered this morning. It's called "Spasm" by Peach, a 90's hard rock band which featured Justin Chancellor on bass (before he was the bassist for Tool). ~Cheers

Boss BD 2 or Big Muff?!?!

I hear Big Muffs are reliable, but not the most high end fuzz/distortion pedal you can get (that would probably be a ProCo RAT or something), however I have no idea about the Boss Blues Driver. Did you try doing a youtube search of each pedal with someone using your specific bass or something...

Good strings for a Tool-esque sound?

Hey man, thanks for the helpful response. I've been reading that heavier gauged strings tend to fair better with aggressive picking and lower tuning, which half the time I play in Drop D, so I'll likely just go with the .50 .65 .85 .105 gauge set. I just wish my local music store carried the...

C standard tuning on Peavey T-40

You probably just need to use a higher gauge set of strings if you're playing in Drop C. That's because strings need a certain amount of tension so that they can sustain longer and vibrate freely without touching the pickups/fretboard, which might also be contributing to your problem.

Good strings for a Tool-esque sound?

Thats great! Should I get the .45-.100 or .50-.105 gauge of the the D'Addario Pro Steels? Which is better for a crunchier, brighter, less brittle sounding tone, specifically for pick style? Also would be curious to know the advantages of each for finger style and slap since I play those styles...

Good strings for a Tool-esque sound?

Hi all, I've always been a big fan of Tool, and being a fan of their sound bass wise, I tried to model my rig after them to a degree to get a similar punchy sound through the mix, something their bassist(s) has always been able to do well compared to a lot of bands I've heard. Awhile back...

Should I upgrade to an Ovation Magnum from a knock off Stingray?

Yes but a Stingray is also considered to be "heavy" and I think the weight feels just fine (I'm a bigger guy so maybe that's why). Are you telling me that a Magnum weighs 13 pounds? I held it the other day and yes it was heavy, but it didn't feel as heavy as the T-40.

Should I upgrade to an Ovation Magnum from a knock off Stingray?

Hi all, about a year and a half ago I bought a SBMM 'Ray 34 bass after upgrading from my old Peavey T-40 (a great bass, but it was too heavy to gig with) but just the other day I noticed my local Guitar Center has one vintage Ovation Magnum, a bass I always dreamed of owning and it was sitting...

    What is YOUR sound?

Oh, well that's cool man. I wish I could just convince my buddies to form a Tool tribute band, but there's no way it would ever happen because we typically don't do many covers unless it's live or something. But I think it's cool that even though JC was an influence you still want to search for...

    What is YOUR sound?

So based off your pics, your sound is something identical to Justin Chancellor's from Tool? I always wanted a Wal just to even try to get his sound, but it's way too expensive for me to afford, so I saved up for a "knock off" Stingray since I know that bass kinda gets a similar tone but is...

    T-40 infosheet

Ahh, my very first bass which lead to my inception as a... well, bassist. I love this thing, except for the fact that it weighs like 13 lbs or something ridiculous. I wouldn't say it sounds "exactly" like a Ric (it's comparable indeed but not identical), there is a clear difference as I think...

EBMM Music Man Basses...why so much $?

Yep, I'm 21 and I always wanted a stingray since I was 19 but thankfully my mom (bless her heart) sacrificed alot to help me buy a "knock off" version (SBMM Ray '34) and even that was pretty expensive for being a beginner bass, essentially. Before that I played (and still own) a Peavey T40 bass...

EBMM Music Man Basses...why so much $?

Ha, and you think Stingrays are overpriced? Okay so maybe they are, but compared to a Rickenbacker or Fender Jazz is it really any different? I'm pretty sure 'Ray's go for relatively cheaper than those other two, and I can think of other basses that are REALLY overpriced in comparison (I'm...

Which 2 bassist had the biggest impact on your style ? V2.0

When I first started playing? Stylistically, it was Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) and tone wise I always wanted to sound like Timmy C. (Rage Against the Machine) But right now my biggest two aspirations for bass are Paul D'Amour (original bassist of Tool) for getting that aggressive pick sound...

    Mike Starr > Mike Inez

You sir, are full of BS. Not once have I heard of Jerry Cantrell writing the bass lines for "Would?" or "Down in a Hole", or any songs off of "Dirt" for that matter. So pipe down about Starr being "a stiff who can hardly play". Hell even his bass lines on Facelift are remarkably good. Has anyone...

    Tell me about Rickenbackers.

Here's proof that he originally used the Magnum for this song. Sound quality isn't as good which was why I didn't use the live video footage, it just happens to be my favorite song played with an ovation magnum. And to the guy with the Ric who got the Tool sound, I'm not surprised you...

    Tell me about Rickenbackers.

I think Rics are cool but they are sorta overrated like Stingrays (and hey I'll admit, I have a Ray34 so I'm kinda sounding like a hypocrite) or the modern Fender basses. Just to let you know TC, you're not going to sound like early Tool just because you decide to go with a Ric. Paul (the...

    Paul D'Amour's tone

Really? I've done alot of research on Paul and his bass tone, not once have I heard of him using an ATK or Ibanez of any sort while he was part of Tool. He used the Ovation Magnum for Opiate (EP), Ric Chris Squire Signature 4001 for Undertow, and a Musicman Stingray 4 during the later end of his...

Bass players with great stage presence

I personally think that Paul D'Amour, the original bassist from Tool had incredible presence and more pissed off energy than I've seen from any other bassist to date. Not to mention his tone is just as pissed off as his presence and it really suits him better than anyone... Be the judge for...

    'High-End' bass purchase

I would personally get the Spector, just because those basses can sound really awesome with just about any hard rock type of music (early Alice in Chains stuff always comes to mind). Warwicks are cool, I have a buddy who owns one and it had so much presence I couldn't believe the wide...

    Advice on choosing a bass

Well I don't know what praise/worship music sounds like since I am not religious and don't typically affiliate with that sort of music, but if you want a bass with some personality and punch in tone then I would have to recommend any of the Sterling By Music Man basses. They are knock offs of...

Who was the best bassist in TOOL?

It seems like the general consensus is that Paul's tone was better but Justin's playing fit better with Tool's music. I can definitely agree with that! It's also kinda an unfair matchup when you think about it, Paul was on one EP and one LP, Justin's been featured on three albums now, so...
