NBD: Gibson SG What the ????

Congrats. Beautiful bass. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and love it! Such a great instrument and really good value for money with the hard case included! Mine has a super red rosewood board which I love, I was curious if this is normal or just a one-off piece of rosewood! How is yours?

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

Thanks for this post, really informative and responds to my question. Just the sort of thing I was after! I'm not actually looking to buy a bass (bought a Gibson last week! :bassist:). That cost example was just to point out that often cost is not something that is easily compared between...

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

In reality, yes. But the thread is theoretical. The point is that cost is irrelevant when in a global market. If I in the UK pay twice what someone in the US pays, for the exact same thing, then cost in one swoop has become a non-constant, and therefore a subjective element.

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

My point in this thread is not to wind anybody up, I'm just trying to ascertain the pros and cons of Squier instruments without taking cost into consideration. The notional $1000 is just to help put their real cost to one side. As we have already found, the 'cheapness' of a Squier is...

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

Thanks for the example, it really shows my point. The Expensive instruments are in line with the £/$ exchange rate, the squier is the same amount of $ as it is £! So therefore in the UK, and from the above in India too, the price you pay for a squier is far more proportionally than those of...

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

I get your point, but actually overseas prices aren't always directly proportional. My example... Squire Jag SS in US: $150 in UK: $300 (£200) Gibson SG Bass faded in US: $900 in UK: $900 (£600) As you can see, in terms of value in...

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

This discussion is a theoretical one. If your answer is as above, I further ask in what way is an American fender different from a squier? My point is to try and get away from comments like, 'its good for the money', and try to assess Squiers on their own terms. Hopefully that will help...

$1,000 Squier...A different approach to Squier guitars

I've only been on the boards for a couple of weeks, and its already plain to see that Squier are a pretty well-loved brand around here. But whenever people discuss the brand's pros and cons, answers always come in the context of cost. If they are truly as good as some say, let’s forget what they...

Thoughts on Squire Basses for Professional Musicians?

I totally agree with the sentiment... BUT... The art world are absolutely brutal when it comes to snobbery. In fact, its one of the nice things about popular music (that playing any beat-up old thing and rocking it is enough!). In the art world its all... 'where did you school?'

That's exactly why I went for the Gibson over the squire. I wanted something that would outlast me!

    FNBD: First ever bass!

A couple of quirks, notice that the neck pup is slightly wonky (But check out the colour of the rosewood!!!), and the finishing on the chamfered edges and horns is a little suspect, anyone else have this? TBH it doesn't bother me as its a worn finish that will only get that way over time...

    FNBD: First ever bass!

Hi all, So I went for the SG in the end, got it for £600 in the UK (they usually retail for £650 and up) so i got a good deal! As always, pics for you all, and thanks to all that helped me in this thread! A couple of points, firstly, I love how light it is (compared to my les paul), and...

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

Thanks for th input. Let me try and order my requirements... 1) Size and design (I won't be buying anything unless the gf is happy with a 5th amp in the living room, and that is no mean feat!) 2) It has to get a good sound with an SG bass, and get enough clean tones with its hot pups...

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

Looks good for a keyboard, but would it actually be any good for bass? Plus it is quite expensive! The drums don't have to sound as good as possible, but then again I have no guide on how good the higher frequencies would sound through a bass amp!

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

Thanks for all of the input. I have been thinking about the Ampeg cl micro (because it looks fantastic), but have read that it doesn't do clean sounds at all. Obviously with the sg pups being pretty hot I am concerned that I won't get a decent clean tone. What do you guys think of this one...

Looks like the ashdown has a 'mix' control. Is that a seperate volume for the aux input?

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

That would be the idea. If not I am going to have to buy 2 devices, which would be a bit crazy as I already have 4 amps in the living room (Marshall JMP1 1W, Vox AC4 Head and Cab, Fender Champ 600, Yamaha THR10C)!!! My aim is to get a decent bass amp that looks good (for example I think that...

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

I think if the device was the right one for the job, I could go to around £300 tops (~$500), but I'd prefer to keep it below£150 (~$250) if possible.

Please help me find a bass amp could also amplify my electric drum kit!

Hi all, So I am about to pull the trigger on a Gibson SG bass thanks to the help in another thread, and I am looking to get an amplifier to go with it (I'll probably buy the amp a week or so after the bass arrives). But I also have an electronic drum kit that I'd like to amplify too, and...

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

So I've decided on the Gibson SG, I will be getting it delivered later this week. However I have been thinking about getting the squire also, but maybe thats just a bit ridiculous. When it arrives I'll start a NBD thread with pics et al. I'd just like to thank everyone who has helped by...

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

SO I went to test a bunch of basses over the weekend, and have narrowed it down to two models: 1) Gibson SG Faded 2) Squire Mustang VM Was very impressed by the squier, but am still a bit hung up on my misconceptions for the brand. The Gibson is of course, a Gibson. But do they have the...

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. I have 2 mustang pawn shops on reserve at a guitar shop to test out tomorrow. I'll try and play some squires etc also while I'm there. I also saw that I could get a Gibson sg faded bass for the same money, which would give me American made (vs...

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

Thanks again, and I will let you know! I understand its really difficult comparing prices in different regions, so thanks for the input. From my research it seems like in the UK we just don't get those crazy cheap deals that can be found stateside. For example: 1) Squire Jag SS...

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

Let me respecify... 1) Bass is not my first instrument, so I would feel uncomfortable spending heaps on something that is inevitably going to be played less than my guitars. 2) For me, that amount is about £600 ($1000) max, and remember that stuff costs much more in the uk than in the...

They look lovely, I mean, really lovely. But I'm not sure that I could justify spending that much on an instrument that isn't my primary thing (I don't even have guitars that expensive!):bawl:

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

Thanks again for the reply. It's good to know that they've come far since when I last considered them, it definitely opens up the potential for something a little cheaper. Are there times when people would prefer them over a fender (at a similar price point), and how do they compare to the...

Thanks for the feedback! I've had a brief look, but back when I first bought electric guitars Squire were a brand to avoid unless for a first time instrument to eventually move up from. Have things changed lately? I'm looking to buy 1 decent instument to out-last me!

Buying first bass, want a short scale, please help! (thinking about pawn shop mustang

Hi everyone, This is my first post! I have been playing guitar for about 20 years, and have recently been looking into buying my first bass. I have had a go at bass guitars in the past, so they aren't totally unfamiliar, but I have always had trouble with the sheer length of the stretches...
