How many gigs did YOU play last year?

I played 84, the band had more, those are just the ones I was on.
  2. Dusty Elmer

Worst band name you have ever heard.

My first band when I was in high school was called Shaft Zero. We played shows with other local bands like Feedback, Aftermath, and Fuzz Monkey.

    must-visit bass/music shops in NYC

Visiting NYC for a few days, meeting my girlfriend's dad to ask him if I can pop the question(!!!) and I'd like to find some cool music shops to visit and grab a t-shirt or case sticker, preferably with an emphasis on basses, but anything cool will do. I'm from central NY state and have only...

I think I have to walk.

Yeah, per song. My feeling on solos, on any instrument, is that less is more, and certainly when it comes to bass and drums. Upright is, I guess, a novelty to some degree, so the first solo would grab peoples attention, then less and less with each successive solo of course. But I think I was...

I think I have to walk.

In a perfect world! It was really great. I've played for 3 years and hundreds of shows with these guys, and never had a show where it was just the 2 of us. If they were all that fun I'd think twice before leaving honestly.

I think I have to walk.

Thanks again to everyone for the replies. The gig went really well as a 2 piece. Probably one of the most fun shows I've played. Happy bar owner, happy crowd. One of the things that always kind of bothered me was seemingly endless soloing that would go on between the upright and the guitar and...

I think I have to walk.

Thanks again to everyone who replied. It's really cool to see well over a hundred replies and every one of them supportive and offering solid advice and perspective. You all are the best, most common-sense-having group of pro's on the internet.

I think I have to walk.

We have a couple different iterations we can do, depending on availability/venue, etc. Everything from 5 piece drums/keys/guitar/bass/banjo down to a bass/guitar duo. These shows were booked for the 3 piece string band, guitar/banjo/bass. That's what this show is. A few bands each doing 5 songs.

I think I have to walk.

I really appreciate this and the other offers I've received for subs! unfortunately we're (they're now, really) an originals band. They just follow whatever the main booker says. Could argue on the side of common-sense and professionalism all day long but they'd go with what he says. Almost...

I think I have to walk.

They're complicit. They all have the same skewed view on these things, I guess as a result of the main booker's influence. They've not met with much failure yet, and are getting a little too big for their britches honestly. We have not rehearsed any Queen songs ever. Delusional is a word that...

I think I have to walk.

I think I can. I'm going to ask the owner what he'd like me to do regarding the 11/22 gig. I contacted him today to let him know we're forced to be a duo tomorrow, and to make sure that that was ok. He has a little trepidation, rightfully so, but ok'd it. The sticky point is that this band is...

I think I have to walk.

I'll try to make this as concise as possible. Might be more of a vent than asking for advice, but I'm open to advice as well. I play in a fairly successful local Americana band, and have been playing with them for 3 years. I'm 9 years older (35) than the youngest member, and have been around...

Why play an Am. Std P Bass, when you can have a 5 string banjo fo the same $$$.

The deliverance/hillbilly/settin'-on-a-hay-bale-in-yer-overalls-sucking'-on-a-reed thing is so played out. It's our equivalent to freebird, and only goes to show the offenders complete lack of knowledge on the subject. I play banjo professionally and that Gold Tone, while a fine instrument, is...

Is the bass the only instrument you play?

I play 5 string banjo professionally. Also play guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle, and drums. Playing bass mostly in my room (for the time being anyway.) I've noticed that playing bass/listening more intently to the bass on recordings has really boosted my banjo playing in terms of my feel and...

If you could have one famous bass

Charlie McCoy's Jazz Bass that he used with Dylan.

Why did you start playing bass?

I started out my musical career playing drums and guitar in rock and country bands respectively. Became a professional clawhammer and Scruggs-style banjo player, but through the years I've developed a love for the bass, both electric and upright. Finally snagged a good bass a couple years ago...

Nice looking rig, and I bet it sounded as great as it looks.

Bassists Who Double on Mandolin Club

Count me in! Only been playing bass seriously for a couple years. I'm really a banjo player and mandolin player, but I think I enjoy playing bass as much as anything else.

    Online calendar resistance: any solutions?

I play in a really busy Americana-type band and we use the Tiny Calendar app on our phones. Works like a charm. If any of us are busy we just block out the date(s), and we can all see it. Whoever books the gig puts it in the calendar along with the time, pay, address, etc. It works best if you...

    What flat/tapewound string for a CIJ P-Bass?

Thanks everyone, you all gave me a starting point and I appreciate it!

    What flat/tapewound string for a CIJ P-Bass?

Hey guys, new guy here. I just scored a CIJ ‘57 reissue P-bass and I’m not sure what strings are my best bet. I hear LaBella flats are high tension, but is that also true for their tapewounds? I had Rotosound tapes on my old Danelectro and I liked them on that, but I’m looking for some insight...
