Why did you quit a band?

The guitarist was convinced we could play a combination of his mediocre originals, jazz and blues standards that would get the young folks dancing. Oh, and he thought playing Santana and Eric Clapton wouldn't showcase our talent.

What's the best compliment you've ever received about your playing?

I've only played bass at open mic nights, but the drummer told me, "you have great tempo," and the regular bassist (who is actually a tiringt professional) told me I know how to groove. I'll definitely take those.

What's the deal with "simple bassists"?

"Running With The Devil" comes to mind.

    Do professional musicians intimidate you?

Ok, as someone who would put himself somewhere in between novice and intermediate, yes, I can be intimidated by a pro. My bass teacher (Johnny B. Gayden, no, I don't need help pickup up the name I just dropped) is a Grammy-winning artist who played with Albert Collins. I definitely get nervous...

A Squier Jaguar with a bridge HB? That could be interesting.

What's the deal with "simple bassists"?

I was listening to /playing along with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" this morning. Give it a listen. The part is very simple to start, basic quarter note stuff. Then some extra stuff gets thrown in, making it a bit tastier. I do this tune at open mic nights and started playing pretty much only the...

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

Yeah, it's great! You can do a standard P sound by rolling the bridge pickup volume off, or get a substantial growl with the bridge pickup alone, or mix for a beefy, spicy bully of a tone! You can find these basses on ebay or reverb some. I might have to get a blacktop precision (which has two...

IKR? I'd never played flats before. This bass walks the line between P and J beautifully, and I'm going to put flats in my basses from now on!

I'll show my latest acquisition, which was waiting for me when I got home! That's a Fender Blacktop Jazz, and it came with flats!

What's the deal with "simple bassists"?

I'm a converted guitarist. Every fibre of my being wants to do all sorts of embellishments, tricks, and flights of fancy. Then, when I learn bass parts to cover songs (and I seem to choose neat ones), I find that I have to work really hard to get the actual part right. Forget the trick bag...

    Blend Control Volume Question

Hey yes, I have solved the problem. First, I took the bass in and let my friendly neighborhood guitar tech fix it. Cost me $25. Second, I've bought a couple better basses since!

Fender Noir P Bass…just another MIM?

I got one of these a few months ago. Looks great, sounds like a BEAST (although there is some fret noise). Totally worth it.

P-Bass versus J-Bass. What do you prefer?

I prefer my jazz to my precision, because with my short fingers it's easier to play. However, I believe in the right tool for the job. It all depends upon which tool supports the groove properly.

    I think I need a P bass

Oh, I was foolish enough to think I didn't need a P. Then I saw the light. Or the dark, as the case may be.

    Blend Control Volume Question

Further, not connecting the grounds: so do you leave the ground wires dangling? Or do you connect them together but not to the pot's ground lug?

    Blend Control Volume Question

It does sound a bit tinny and bass-less. How do I check the pickups "after in phase" as you put it? I'm sort of technical but a n00b when it comes to the inner workings of things electronic.

    Blend Control Volume Question

Hey folks, Yesterday I picked up a Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active IV (that's a long name!) for a measly $130. I notice when the blend control is dead center, the volume is considerably lower than when I nudge it to either side. The bridge pickup is higher than the neck pickup. Could that be...

    Where to (re)start?

Thank you all for your opinions. I'm out there, taking a look around at what's available to me. I stopped messing around with bass because frankly, I hadn't attained Buddha nature yet and realized bass was what I should have done from the start.

    Where to (re)start?

Good evening everyone, I had a Squier P-bass nearly 30 years ago and quite honestly, while I loved playing bass, the instrument SUCKED. Specifically, the neck was terrible. I ended up getting rid of the bass after about a year and never got another. Now, I'm feeling the need to get back into...

New Members: How did you find TalkBass?

I found this forum because I wanted to know if a pj bass sounded more like a p or a j or in between and this site came up in the debate. So of course I ended up signing up.
