BREAKING! The 80's Bass Decade! Video Launches Today!

Enjoyed that. Majority of my basses Tokai, Greco, Ibanez, Yamaha & Aria, along with my GK amplification are from this era, and I'm still using it. Thanks for this video :)

Some lovely Ibby's in this thread Here's my couple of 1983 RB920's. One is fretted & one fretless. Had them for nearly 30 years.

    Joyo Scylla "modification"

Thanks @BassmanNate. Just did this really easy mod in about 10 mins. Makes the visual metering more useable on this great budget comp :)

Greco Gang! - The Officially Unofficial Greco Club

Here's my 1981 Greco PB450 'Spacy Sound'. It's a lovely player. Quite a deep chunky 70's style neck profile, which I prefer on P-Basses. Nice weight too at 3.8kg/8.4 lbs. It already had a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 'Vintage' installed when I got it, which is actually fortunately one of my favourite...

    Transformer modification on vintage amps

Yeah, try & barter with the seller, get the price down if you can. They seem to sell for £450 - £500 here in the UK when they occasionally come up for sale. I found all three of mine cheap from pawnshops & Craigslist when out on business trips in the states years ago & carried them back in my...

    Transformer modification on vintage amps

TBH some people are a bit loathe to take things apart, or are not confident to do so. I know I am, unless something's not working or needs tweaking/fixing. For me personally, that wouldn't be a deal breaker as long as the amp works OK. Guessing the amp's too far from you to have a look at? If...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Not sure short scale strings will be long enough mate, maybe they will.... As the Vistas are string through body like a Mustang, most use medium scale (32") strings on these. Though I've managed to use cut-down long scale Labella black nylon tapewounds on one of mine.

    Transformer modification on vintage amps

Hi, I've had two 800RB's & a 400RB which were on US (110-120V) voltages converted to UK (240V) with no issues. I brought them back to the UK from US. These old classic GK's are not that common in the UK. Swapped out the original transformers for more efficient & lighter toroidal versions -...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Hi there, looks like a lovely bass you got there, great in white. I've had all the other three colours but not a white one (yet!) The tuners look OK to me, but maybe my ageing eyes can't see what the string alignment issue is? The stock bridges on the Vistas are OK (IMHO) & do the job fine...

    DemonFX Pedals - Any good?

Yeah, the 'Mini Chorus' is great isn't it. Guess it's a clone of a clone of a albeit modded clone (EHX) I found the 'Super Symmetry' to be close enough to my original Darkglass. Interested to know which two controls you found inactive on the Demonfx clone? I steered clear of the Demonfx Cali76...

    DemonFX Pedals - Any good?

I have one of their Super Symmetry clones. A-B'ing it - it's close enough to the original (discontinued) Darkglass original I also have. IMHO it's quite good.

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

I put an Aaron Armstrong MB-1 replacement in a 'Batwing' SB-700 recently as the original had died. Managed to A-B test against another '80 SB-700 with a functioning original pickup, exactly the same bass. Couldn't hear any difference in tone - sounded just as punchy & articulate.

Greco Gang! - The Officially Unofficial Greco Club

Hi all & festive greetings :) Some lovely Grecos in this thread.... Just treated myself to a Christmas present, a nice '81 'Spacy Sound'. These don't seem to be that common here in UK, compared to the equivalent Tokais from around the same era. It's in great condition, and plays like dream...

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

If the truss rod nut is maxed out, with no more thread turns left, you could try the old washer/spacer trick under the truss rod nut. I did this on my old Tokai Hardpuncher and it worked.

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

Just installed an Aaron Armstrong 'MB-1' in my SB-700 at the weekend to replace the dead original. Dropped in easily with no issues. Had to rewire/reconfigure the series/parallel switch as the original was 3 wires & the Armstrong is 4 wire conductor. Yeah, I would agree with you @tindrum, it...

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

Thanks Zuma. Love your YT channel BTW. I'm a recent subscriber :D It is a lovely instrument. Frets have no wear too - probably due to it apparently wearing the same set of Rotosound flats for the last 30+ years! :) which I've now changed for some GHS 'Boomers' The 'SB700' seems to be a sticker...

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

Hi all, recently acquired this 1980 'batwing' SB700. It had a bridge saddle screw missing, which I've since managed to find the correct replacement. Unfortunately, also one of the coils in the pickup is dead, which I understand is not uncommon - still makes sound albeit lower output. Got an...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Hi all, New arrival of a sonic blue or maybe almost sea foam green Vista to keep the pink & blue ones company... It needs a bit of TLC, and a set up. Oiled the fretboard, which was a bit dry. There's a bit too much relief in the neck, which I can fix when I eventually find the correct allen key...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Hi all, I've just acquired another lovely Vista MM.... However, the neck needs a bit of relief taking out of it. Been through my box of loads of allen keys, but struggling to find one that fits the truss rod. Could somebody who knows, please advise the right size? Cheers

Same here, got Chromes on one, and La Bella nylon tapewounds on the other. Both are cut down long scale strings sets, a bit tight round E string tuner, but they work & sound great :)

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Hello & welcome fellow UK Pink Vista MM owner, can't be that many of us about :D That looks in great condition, your daughter took care of it - well done getting it back  Totally agree with you, it's a killer bass & punches well above it's size - doesn't it? Just out of curiosity...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

My pickup unfortunately died in one of my Vista MM's recently, probably due to a break in the coil. Was a shame as the originals in these basses are killer pickups IMHO :(. The pickup was looking a bit tatty also, worn out, with the top surface board curling, so it would have needed a bit more...

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

Ahhh yes, see what you mean. The posts would have originally been there for a foam dampening plate, which has gone on mine & others I've seen. I didn't remove the posts as they don't get in the way :bassist::)

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

No work done on the pickups actually, these are the stock ones. Which to me, look quite modern considering the age of this bass - like those soapbars found on 80's Ibanez or Aria's... Unfortunately missing the pickup & bridge covers...Cheers :)

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

It's the original bridge plate, but I had to swap out the old saddles as some of the grub screws had seized with corrosion. Replaced them with near identical ones taken from an old MIJ Antoria bass.

The Official Medium Scale Bass Club

I'm loving this recent 32" scale addition to my bass family.... 1972 Yamaha SB-50, not many were made from what I've researched. It's lovely to play, nice weight & a wide variety of killer tones - from a retro thump to quite modern. D'addario Chromes really suit this bass, give it a nice punch.

Great many thanks for the suggestion will look into that Retrovibe. Yeah it does sound good :) Good price too, plus they can wind one to 9k spec. too, which is close to the original Vista Tone. Plus the company Retrovibe is actually not far from my house, so more than local to me! :) Cheers

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Thanks for the suggestion, those Sentell pickups look great! The only thing is that, with me being in the UK, the shipping costs & import duties would probably increase the cost a lot. Also, with me going out to the middle east in four weeks, shipping time might be prohibitive too - as I want to...

    Squier MusicMaster Vista Club

Glad you got your Vista MM back sounding good @tommyeadg . After reading yours & other's posts regarding a similar issue with my own black MM, with the tone pot - I've diagnosed it as having a dead pickup too. I'm weighing up my options now on whether to get the existing pickup rewound/repaired...

    Fender Mustang Club

Thanks :)... It's a lovely bass to play, sounds a bit harder, maybe punchier than the MIJ. Maybe due to it's ash body. Was a bit apprehensive when I bought it on Ebay a short while ago, as I understand 70's Fenders can be a bit of a gamble regarding quality. However, wasn't disappointed when I...
