Need a voice of reason: Fender Custom Shop Jaco vs Making my own via a 2007 Navigator 60s Jazz Bass

I have owned a custom shop Jaco bass. It was meh. The neck coating had a slight waxy texture, and the neck was a red pau Ferro. So I made my own neck with CA coating! 6-10 coats, sanding in between, and used a car buffer with 4 levels of grit. Make your own!

If you were famous...what brand would produce your signature bass and what would it be like?

Fodera. This would be my signature bass. My baby.

Why do so many players love flats?

Rounds all the way. I only use flats for Motown and 60s music. You just can’t get the growl with flats. Rounds do require good technique and controlled muting for recording, and I think that is what puts a lot of people off. Flats are so forgiving of fingering mistakes, while rounds will grate...

    Seller wants his bass back?

The fact that he needed someone else's opinion to decide whether to return it or not tells me he's keeping it. AND . . . he is.

Was buying your dream bass worth it?

That depends on where you are in life. For me, my Fodera was worth it. It sits perfectly, just about 1 inch shifted to the right of where a Jazz would lay, so the reach to the nut is more comfortable. The neck is perfect. I mean, perfect. The electronics will do almost anything. I can go from...

How are Pink Floyd considered PROG rock?

Pink Floyd is a perfect example of one of the original Prog Rock Bands. People tend to think of Prog rock as virtuosos and complex music, but Prog came out of the Psychedelic era, and the earliest Prog rock bands, which included Pink Floyd, the original Genesis, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues...

What are the cons of PJs, or: Why don’t you have a PJ?

I made a terrible mistake and bought a dual coil switchable humbucker installed bass. Now I can have whatever I want. PBass Jazz P/J MM Reverse coil Life is better.

What bass have you owned the longest and do you still play it?

I have a 1983 MIJ Fender Jazz. Bought it when I was 14. One refret. I have played the crap out of that bass, and finally relegated it to the back burner for my Fodera. All good things must come to an end!

BL wants me to pick one bass and stick with it

Sorry to say this, but being consistent and bringing a consistent sound is your responsibility as a musician. The choice should be made at home. Want a different sound? Join a second band!

How to you load an 810 alone?

In my years of playing, I never EVER understood the logic of an 8x10 vs a 4x10 plus a 1x15 or even 2 4x10s. There is so much more versatility in the two box setup, after years of seeing sorry dudes humping their 8x10s around, I have come to the conclusion it must be a penis thing.

How many basses does a pro need?

One to get the job, many to build a reputation. In the studio, it's helpful to have options if the sound isn't right. If you are playing metal or specific genre sound, that's one thing. If you are playing nuanced music, progressive, cross-genre stuff, or musical theatre, you want options. My...

Ouch...bass player called out on stage for being out of tune.

Not being in tune is inexcusable for a bass player. It’s almost as bad as forgetting the chord changes. Slam her all you want for being unprofessional, he won’t EVER do that again. She just helped him and everyone he will play with from now on. Being demanding gets results.

Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

Led Zeppelin has several songs, like Kashmir, Stairway, Levee, The Ocean, Immigrant, etc., that are in a different league than DP. I think a fairer comparison would be DP and Aerosmith. Not to knock DP too much, but comparing them to The Hammer of the Gods is like comparing Jefferson...

    Am I an absolute outlier?

I honestly love my 24 fret bass - when I am playing by myself. When I play with others - well, I have better things to do than noodle around on the high registers. It gets me away from the bass drum, and the bass drum is my buddy. I used to noodle around a lot more on the high registers, and...

Intentional irony: A good bassist on an inexpensive bass

I have a Fender Jazz Frankenbass with a 1980's Mexican made neck (that I have loved for 30+ years), and a body and electronics that happen to be what I am into at that time. I would always gig rock or pop with that bass. It's like home. Jazz or fusion? Where I am stretched to the limit...

You're limited to 2 basses, what are they?

"Rest of life bass" With a Twist

I think that I would have to put aside my beloved but aging Frankenbass, and pick up my new love: my Fodera. My reward for loving playing bass for 40 years. Had to use the photo they took, it's better than any I could take.

    Where do you stand?

I will always choose to be on the hi-hat side of the drummer. That is usually Stage Left. That way, a simple turn to the right allows me and the drummer to lock in. Plus, if I am looking to the guitar or keys on the other side, I look over the drummer. If I am on the other side, I can't see...

When did you realize you were a bassist?

I remember the day that I decided to learn the bass. I was in my room, I was 12, and I was listening to "London Calling" by the Clash. I had never heard anything like it, even though it wasn't new at the time, but the bass line was SO STANKY. Then, my older brother came in and had a NEW...

How many frets do *you* need on your 4-string?

I need 20 to play "The Real Me". So that's my minimum. 19 for Sir Duke. If I don't use 21-24, they are useful as indicators for pinch harmonics.

Why are lined Fretless even a thing?

I have a simple answer, as I had a Carvin bass that I converted to fretless. The process of converting a fretted bass to fretless leaves voids in the neck wood where the fret slots were. Therefore, the luthier recommended that we place thin wood slivers in the voids, gluing them in and then...
