Official Elrick Bass Club Thread...part 2!!!

For the longest time, I loved the sound of Rob's basses and was amazed by the construction, but I'd never played one with a spacing I could handle. So when we built the first version of the SLC, I measure everything on the Moduluses and got it 17mm and the same spacing at the nut so I was super...

PYPB 44: ...like Tetris with boxes, wires and cables

Here's the most recent version of my pedal board - all inside the MOD DuoX :) Every purple line is an audio path, every blue one is MIDI... this board is mono in, three stereo signals out, and is controlled via a Keith McMillen Softstep and Quneo, a MOD Footswitch and two expression pedals...

bit late to the party here, but here's a vid of my most recent Elrick - Mk II of my signature bass, the SLC: Spec is that it's 32" scale, 16.5mm spacing, headless, passive, dual coil pickups, splitable to single coil, controls are vol/vol/tone, with a pickup selector switch and a kill switch...

Seeking Fretless Wisdom: Advice on Technique, Musicality, and Finding the Right Teacher

finally getting caught up here... A few thoughts on fretless, that for the most part apply to all music making :) Firstly, there's no 'cheating' - do what you need to do to make the music be what it should be. In my experience as a teacher and player (across 30-odd years, teaching at...

Is this thing on? (the return of Dr Steve) :)

Hi all, sticking my head back into Talkbass after a decade away working on a PhD. Finally finished that this summer, so now re-exploring the world as it existed before every spare moment was spoken for! So, bring on your questions, discussions, queries and comments. I'll endeavour to be...

    Flat wound strings

hi Nigel! So long as you're not stringing through the body, any that will fit the scale length should be fine - my preference is for Dunlop flats, but I've also really enjoyed Labella, Bass Centre Elites and Tomastik. I've yet to try the Dogal strings but I hear really good things :)

Steve, just a question about gear

hey! So so sorry I didn't see this when you posted it - I'm not around here as often as before, but if an answer a year late is interesting (though clearly not helpful for your paper! sorry about that!) I use the laptop for three things - it records everything I do multitracked, it's the sound...

    The Solo Bass Network

ha! yeah, that hasn't been updated in a looooong time... Around the time that YouTube came on the scene and tracking what people were up to with solo bass became a wholly futile pursuit... :)

Not a lot of options for reverbs with low cut/hi pass?

Yeah, that's a bit of mistaken editing in the video - the MXR *does* have a bass roll-off on the plate setting, with the tone turned up full, but it's not controllable as a separate feature. The sound I was actually using was one I'd built myself in the MOD Devices MOD Duo - a multi-FX box that...

    Splitting the signal chain?

My system is good old fashioned stereo - hard panned left/right out of my MOTU Ultralite - so it's mainly stereo effects like reverb, chorus, delay, and some panning filters that give it width... I don't generally run loopers out of one cab and other signal out of the other, except on one patch...

Two new Steve Lawson video - solo track and pedal overview

Hi all, There are two new videos of mine up on YouTube over the last week or so - first there's this solo one, filmed by Gregor Fris from BassTheWorld.com at the Frankfurt Musikmesse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qvLtxke7m4 And then there's this run-down of the 5 main pedals I'm...

hi all, here's the pedal run-down that was mentioned - there are three overdrives on here, plus a MXR Fuzz and MXR Chorus. I love all of these, and particularly like them in combination. I've also got an Aguilar Agro and a Markbass Tube Marker that are wonderful... more video to follow...

    E-Bow

just to echo what Michael said, I've never felt the need to modify an eBow to make it do what I need it to do. It's a whole new technique, much like playing slide or learning to play with a pick, and I find that I'm still developing greater facility with it 16 years after first starting to...

What effect to create an ambient 'pad' ?

The main things I use for big ambient sounds are reverb, delay, chorus, envelope and a VOLUME PEDAL. Getting rid of the attack is vital to creating pads rather than echoing rhythmic effects. I often use an envelope filter of some sort after the delay so that the 'shape' of the sound is...

Trip Wamsley being awesome back in '96

I've been talking about this a bit recently with friends in various contexts. I remember when I first started out playing solo, in the late 90s, I put together a bit on my website (which eventually became its own site) called the Solo Bass Network - the idea being to link together the tiny...

    Thomastic Jazz Flat Wounds

...sorry for the late reply - I've got Thomastik strings on my Rick Turner 'amplicoustic' bass, they're the strings that were developed especially for the bass with a nylon core. On my fretless 6 string Modulus, however, I've got Bass Centre Elites flats - I've tried a lot of others...

New 10-album Magnum Opus now available :)

I've just finished four months of work on a 10 album set of music I made with a multi-instrumentalist from San Francisco called Daniel Berkman. It's by far the biggest music project I've ever undertaken, and has spiralled out of all proportion to my estimation of the amount of work it would...

Trip Wamsley being awesome back in '96

this is great - I first heard Trip about 3 years after this, when still in his 'Mini-Manthing' phase... he did it exceptionally well... One wonders what would've happened if enough people had looked at Michael's approach as something to adopt and develop rather than to steer clear of for...

7 string basses in now in 2013?

Pretty much every 7 I've ever played felt like a 6 with another 1-string instrument added on the top... nice, but struggled for continuity of tone across the neck. The one biggest exception was a Mattisson bass at NAMM this year - http://www.mattissonbass.se/ - as played by Henrik from Dirty...

Lexicon MPX G2, basic setup question for bass guitar

hi! first thing to do is find presets you like, and them modify them. Makes life a whole lot easier. secondly, one of the biggest tone-shaping elements of the G2 is the amp simulator. Go in and play around with it. You may well end up just turning it off for most sounds. I leave it on...

Happy New Year, bass-monkeys :) I've got quite a few things happening of late. Firstly, a new album - http://music.stevelawson.net/album/accidentally-on-purpose - its' a duo record with a multi-instrumentalist from San Francisco called Daniel Berkman, recorded live last year in Oakland...

    The role of solo bass

...by 'solo' do you mean 'playing on your own' or just a more featured role for the bass guitar than is typical in a rock band? Cos by definition, 'solo' requires no band :) ...but there are a set of techniques and approaches that seem to have grown up around the community of bassists...

    Solo bass looping?

Hi Ben, sorry I'm late on this one... I haven't as yet had a proper play with an LP2, so I've no idea at all how the MIDI is implemented, or what it's set up to control... I know that the LP1 had some problems syncing externally - it's not a part of the functionality I've experimented with...
