Even if you don't like the strings, a couple months of regular play will wear them out, and you'll come away having learned about them. I've been playing for about 3 years and tried out maybe 6 different types of strings. Some I loved, others not so much, but I felt I learned a little something...

I am also pro-saving-what-you-already-have. Every time you pick your basses up, think of the savings, and allow yourself to dispense some dopamine.

One of my favorite things about bass is that it guarantees you a seat at the table for virtually all genres and contexts of music. Even in ways that guitar can no longer provide. Every now and then, there is a monkey's paw moment, but the benefits still outrange the drawbacks, by far imo.

I have the gold Schallers and a pair of the ESPs in matte black. They're both great. Schallers feel a touch sturdier but the ESPs are a bit lower profile, which is a meaningful trade-off.

Question re: original post - what would be the cause of volume being lower on the E string? Would that be a pickup height issue?
