    playing under the influence

I’m not a gigging musician, so my opinion might be irrelevant. But I have seen many VH1 behind the music documentaries. Sad to say but many of the most talented and respected musicians of our time were sh*t faced while performing for tens of thousands of fans. If it works, it works. Until it...

    Effects?

If you have a guitar center store near you I’d recommend taking a look at their used offerings. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the current multi fx/modelers out there. Or if that’s not an option, grab a Pod express bass would be my next recommendation. Headrush MX5 can be had right...

Hola Music Soft Bass Gig Bag (15mm padding) $7.85 at Menards?!

I just bought 3. $15 each with shipping taxes and processing fees. Great timing as I’m getting ready for a move this spring.

GC treated me well-Don’t believe everything you hear

True story: I went to a different GC store today due to my work schedule. I wanted to trade in some old pedals/modelers and pick up an HX Stomp XL currently on sale. I arrived out of the blue, no call ahead, right at store opening time. The sales associate told me he was the only one in the...

Coincidence that the bass channel did a deep dive into the tonepump jr this past weekend?

What was it about the Tonepump Jr that you didn't like? Did the BQC give you the desired results?

NBD: Spector NS Pulse 5 String

I recently decided to get rid of a bunch of old gear that wasn’t getting much use. Used my store credit to pick up a new Spector NS Pulse. I love the black cherry finish with the quilted top. Also really digging the EMG pickups. I am a big fan of the Fishman Fluence pickups but this set is very...

GC treated me well-Don’t believe everything you hear

A lot of comments about store staff being key, which I totally agree with. One detail I left out was that I actually had called the store over the weekend, just to let them know I was bringing in a bunch of gear and to make sure they had enough staff to assist me. The person on the phone...

    Line 6 Bass Pod Express

If you primarily want amp modeling at this time I think I’d recommend the Tonex one bass for a few dollars more. The pod express is limited to the 7 models selected by line 6. Not that they’re bad but you get what you get. Also, I’d say 4 out of the 7 amp models are higher gain sounds.

Ended up choosing the Spector NS Pulse in black cherry finish. NBD post with pics coming soon.

GC treated me well-Don’t believe everything you hear

That’s interesting. My sales associate was telling me that store was #4 in the country in used gear sales, and they pride themselves on giving good value on both ends of the transaction, sellers and buyers. He thought the Manhattan store was one of the stores that did more volume along with...

GC treated me well-Don’t believe everything you hear

I traded in a bunch of old gear at my local GC today. My wife and I are getting ready to put our house on the market this spring and I decided that my guitar and bass collection had some things that have accumulated over the years and I would rather part ways with than store through a move. I...

    Epiphone Thunderbird 60's Ebony Bass

Had one but couldn’t bond with it so I moved on. My advice would be to buy a cheap one and see if you like it. It’s hard to explain but the feel is very different from my other basses. I didn’t understand that it wasn’t for me until I actually owned one and played it regularly.

    Squier Rascal Bass-Convince Me

I recently strung my rascal up with the Labella Stang super polished short scale set and I’m really impressed. Very happy with the tension on the low E, much better than the stock Fender set IMO. I guess it’s supposed to be something somewhere between flat and rounds. So far I’m happy with the...

    Squier Rascal Bass-Convince Me

Thanks, my model is thru body only. My issue is after my initial play through I’m not loving the tension on the low e. I’m hoping some medium/short strings will help with that. I’m also considering flats to hopefully get a stiffer feel.

    Squier Rascal Bass-Convince Me

Thanks, do you have any string recommendations for the rascal? I was considering trying a set of the labella thru-body Stang strings.

    Squier Rascal Bass-Convince Me

Thanks for all the feedback. The price was too good to pass up, so I pulled the trigger yesterday and just got the notification that it’s been shipped. I’ve never owned a short scale and it seems like most of the negative impressions were regarding that aspect. Not sure if weight will be an...

    Squier Rascal Bass-Convince Me

So I’ve wanted a Squier Rascal bass for several years now. Specifically, the candy apple red version with the matching headstock. Black Friday sales are back and it’s currently $350 down from $500 on fender.com. GAS is in full effect and I need a reality check. Hit me with your recommendations.

    Newbie Pedal Question

My recommendation for rock overdrive/distortion would be the blumes. You can find them for less than $100 pretty often used or b-stock. https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/blog-posts/blumes-bass-overdrive

    Online lessons…again. (I know, ugh)

I've tried several online lesson/learning platforms and they haven't worked well for me. My recommendation would be to find a teacher that can both challenge you and simultaneously support you in your growth. This could be a local person you meet with or a remote "zoom" lesson online as long as...

Fuzz addict club! If you don't like it fuzz off!

My Crimson arrived yesterday and I’ve been spending a lot of time comparing it with my hex green Russian. They sound almost identical to my ear in similar settings and the jhs mode seems to brighten up the sound. I really like the tones out of both of these pedals but it’s definitely a redundant...

NBD – GC Scratch and Dent Jackpot

I agree, the grain of the fretboard really pops with a fresh coat of oil. I love the sparkle red finish too! I've been coveting a rascal bass with a similar finish for years now.

NBD – GC Scratch and Dent Jackpot

Yea, I didn't realize it at the time, but I guess there are a few companies that take returned stock from Fender and "refurbish" it to sell on Reverb or eBay. It must have been a trade-in or sale because I doubt that GC would buy refurbished gear to put on their sales floor. The real puzzle...

NBD – GC Scratch and Dent Jackpot

I happened to stop into a local GC store while out running some Sunday errands. I typically stop in to check out what’s new and see if I can find any interesting secondhand trade-in gear. I wasn’t really impressed with the basses in stock, so I demoed a few used pedals and pretty quickly decided...

    Getting back into bass, reccomendations?

I love my sonic p. If you can play one locally and you like the feel, I say go for it. I put a SDQP pickup in it and I now love the sound as well. As good as a $1000 MIM P at 1/4 the cost.

Fuzz addict club! If you don't like it fuzz off!

Just ordered a JHS crimson. I love my ehx green Russian so I’m looking forward to seeing how this stacks up. I was seriously considering the Berkeley as well. The 50% sale going on now seems like a good opportunity to add some classic fuzz models to the stable.

    Line 6 Bass Pod Express

It’s great as a headphone amp. This is how I use mine almost exclusively. It has a dedicated headphone Jack and can playback audio using usb c. Some people report that audio playback through their phone is too loud, but I don’t have that issue using my laptop.
