Double Bass Double bass and humidity

Oh while I am here, here is a conclusion for this thread. My grand-father's upright bass, I decided to buy a stand instead of putting it in the corner. I kept the instrument out of it's bag also, when I walk close to it, I play notes every day, very easily. So yea, having the instrument easily...

    Bad learning technique

Thanks for all your answers on this tread, I read them all today (3 weeks later) I am building my mindset right now, my goals, I don't have any right now, the instruments just appeared in my basements and fortunately I listen to a lot of jazz and other music. The ecosystem is right. Playing...

    Bad learning technique

@Wasnex I don't know what is going to happen with bass yet. I thought I would give up drumming then something happened, I took it out again and practiced every day to the point where I can now just sit and play along jazz pieces of music. Now that it's possible to do that, it's really really...

    Bad learning technique

@Docduval I am happy to read this. :) @tubedude Ok, If I understand correctly, it's ok to practice the scales even if the bass is tuned 1/2 octave lower?. If there is not enough room for some of the lower scales, I skip those and play one similar 1 octave higher.

    Bad learning technique

Well I am back after some time, and you know, to summarize my situation, I inherited a bass guitar and a double bass so I am learning how to learn how to play them. Natively I play drums as a hobby but I love bass as well, I can easily memorize basslines, I like to sing a basslines...

How to match that bass sound? Hole Celebrity Skin

This thread never really took off 😅 but I arrived to some conclusion here. I thought that i could modify the bass to reach a sound close to the music but in fact using some distortion or something. I just dig the sound of the Precision Bass. If I get good at the bass I'll buy one someday...

Double Bass DB - Endpin socket question

Thanks again, I haven't taken any action yet for the end pin. I'll investigate it myself for sure and decide after if I fix it myself, I'll post pictures of the condition. I don't know when i'll dig into that project! but it's all set to do eventually. The bass has been in this condition for...

How to match that bass sound? Hole Celebrity Skin

Hello, I am captivated with that specific bass sound they used a lot in the 90 (and later), like on the album Celebrity Skin. On songs Celebrity Skin or Awful, it's basically the same bass sound. First I don't have a PB or a JB, I've got a dimension bass with 2 knobs only. The tone knob is not...

Learning the notes on the neck

learning the 7 first frets, I like that for a first objective. I have to admit, I could learn with such a technique requiring a lower amount of processing but working with memory instead. Less logic initially and more memorization, I find this kind of a comfortable idea.

Learning the notes on the neck

🤣 Sorry about that but no time of yours is lost. I have to give me small objectives at first. At worst, if I manage to play for only 30 seconds per day, it's already a win for me. I inherited the BG and DB while I was already practicing the drums, it's a lot of hobby, mixed with astronomy...

Thanks for all the interesting data, I'll start with @KenSmithFan suggestion first, working a bit harder, investing more time per day in this, then some ideas from this thread should apply naturally. :)

Learning the notes on the neck

Hello again, I wish to discuss this shortly. I am learning the electric bass and the double bass at the same time.. and I have these 3 tools, tools as simple as it can be. (well..) #1. A neck chart with all the notes for the 21 frets. #2. A scale book with 120 scales on 6 pages: Minor...

Double Bass fixed-do system or Anglo-American letter notation

@JamesGrant If you use letters but someone asks if the piece/song can be played down a tone the you need to rewrite the music (or concentrate really really hard!) If you use numbers then you just need to know what the ‘1’ key is and you’re good to go. Ok thanks for this interesting...

Double Bass DB - Endpin socket question

The cracks around the end pin these were all glued in the past, they are stable, nothing moves.. But obviously the socket of the end pin is smaller then the hole in the body, as if something was missing. But I don't know how these are made. I made a drawing of what I believe is missing, just...

Double Bass DB - Endpin socket question

Hello this morning I examined my grand-father's double bass, the end pin, and I notice that it's not parallel to the instrument it has an angle. Clearly the wood was repaired previously as you can see in the picture, using strong glue. There is a reinforcement plate inside, looks stock, it looks...

Double Bass fixed-do system or Anglo-American letter notation

Thanks for all the comments, i'll stick with the alphabet (cdefgab) as it's the most commonly used system, from what I see here in this thread. My uncles, all musicians, are working in letters too. Tthe theory uses mainly the alphabet and not the solfège. So, case closed for that. Thanks...

Double Bass fixed-do system or Anglo-American letter notation

I am just practicing scales from a electric bass book on the double bass. And from the beginning, I have used the American letter notation which I find less intuitive then the fixed-do system. Today I started singing while playing in "fixed do" instead and it feels much more natural. (The same...

Fretted electric bass and Double bass - Finger position question

Ok it's good to know, flexibility exists with the right hand, the fingers and the thumb, I find this comforting to know. Fretted electric bass and Double bass - Finger position question

@mambo4 On my question 2, I was talking about my right hand. My thumb rests on the E string to mute it or it's anchored over, on the pick plate. But the thing is, often, when it's time to play on the E string, I pick it with my thumb instead of the index or finger. I am using thumb to pluck E...

    Speaker flapping?

Ok problem solved.. the flapping was totally the insulation blocking the port hole.. I used a couple of tacks and a screw + a large washer to screw it down, not it can't move no more, it's not touching the port anymore and I get zero flapping, only a pure bass sound. I think this combo sounds...

    Speaker flapping?

I just tried the speaker free air and can't hear a thing wrong with it. However I found something critical. The insulation is blocking the porthole and it's literally free, it can move up and down.. I think this is it. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Some pictures of the investigation, it's a very simple device so far.. For those interested to see inside, see the second link with all the images. Speaker flapping?

Ok i've got many things to try, Investigation time for the next hour. Update: The faulty sound is the same with another bass, it's the same in a different room. According to another person, the vibration comes from the combo directly like if something is vibrating inside of the enclosure. I...

    Speaker flapping?

No, I won't drive the unit at maximum power with bass boost, i've used other speakers before. The flapping is at fairly low volume already, what I meant is, I am going to boost it up a bit and see. Don't look like a big deal, that speaker can be replaced. @agedhorse I found the discontinued...
