Why Do You Like Older Fender Basses?

    Simply, simplicity.

    Done with flatwounds

IME - Most flats take a lot of time to break in and settle (could take a few months), when they do the bottom end seems to tighten and the highs sweeten. Also, it really depends on the bass, a PBass sounds great with either, that's why people generally suggest having one of each. JBasses do...

    P Bass Upsides?

I don't agree that it's a 'one trick pony,' it depends on how you play it.

    P Bass Upsides?

"Clearly limited?" The older I get, the more I realize how liberating a single p/up base is, especially a P-Bass. It's simple, responds perfectly and cuts through the mix easily. Every time I bring out a P-Bass, be it wrapped with rounds or flats, I'm never disappointed. If you seriously...

    Bass for Modern Pop?

Honestly, modern 'pop' songs use the same basses as been used since the beginning. I guess if you really want to be 'progressive,' buy a Bongo.

Traynor SB500H Bass Head - Any Thoughts?

Nope. Not sure where you'd hear that, I was there and, if anything, was derived from previous Traynor/Yorkville bass combos. The tone stack is not typical either. Unfortunately, the designer had passed away a few years ago.

    New Traynor YBA 100!!

Sorry, I'm not the one to ask about 'technical' issues. I would suggest emailing our support team. (while I do work in engineering,' I primarily work on the graphics for the products. I am happy that it sounds better to you with your new tubes!

    Steve's Music "Restructuring "

Long & McQuade has a policy to NOT complete with mom and pop shops. If the mom and pop store begins to falter, and option is for L&M to buy them (this is well known), yes that's true... but, they actually keep the staff and managers, the old owner often takes up a roll as head manager. Jack was...

Does it use a heater on the carafe or is the carafe insulated (I prefer the insulated carafe). Not in the market but curious.

Signature Basses / Instruments...yes or no

Yup, I agree, it's unique enough to hold its own. I bought the first Sterling edition (2024 crop) and LOVE it. A finger funk monster!

NAD - the TC Electronic BQ500 finally showed up!

An engineer tested it, measured the amp under load. Tone stack isn't anything revolutionary. Sorry, I don't think he saved the results. I think he was just curious.

NAD - the TC Electronic BQ500 finally showed up!

Received mine last month (Nov 2025). Got it tested at work, it's a clean 400W 4-ohm head, not too shabby for the price point. I used it once for a practice an will probably continue to do so as it's size makes it easier to carry (I bought a small messenger bag). Very happy with the purchase!

Multiple Fender Precisions in your collection?

Simply, IME, it's the strings that determine whether you want/need multiple. Yes, simply one for rounds and one for flats.

They get better with age, lows tighten and the highs temper nicely.

Will there be a 2026 crop is the real question.
  18. GrapeBass

    Bass playing and aging?

At 61, I need to play more but the time is tighter. Bass preferences are simpler and more raw and organic. Amplification preferences are generally smaller and lighter. Volume levels are down, 'appropriate' for the room and other musicians.

    Yorkville/Traynor Club?! Part 2

The YBA100 is based on the YBA300, the YBA200 is different (tone stack and basic design). I guess the YBA200 is more aggressive by nature as the YBA100/YBA300 might be considered 'cleaner.'

The $399 Joe Dart Bass by SBMM

The $399 Joe Dart Bass by SBMM

I, personally, don't have a problem with the way it is. If I had a problem I probably would shim the neck as (I believe) it will affect the overall tone of the instrument. I am very pleased with the my 2024 Joe Dart and think it's actually gotten better with age (broken in strings).

The $399 Joe Dart Bass by SBMM

IME, lowering the p/up is not possible, at least on the 2024 crop (yes, I've tried).
  26. GrapeBass

The $399 Joe Dart Bass by SBMM

That would be a good suggestion but with the SBMM Joe Dart 2024 Crop, at least in my case, is not possible (yes, I've tried). Also, I don't find it particularly bad, it allows me to have lots of play and make use of the only control. If it only had a tone, instead of a volume control, it...

The $399 Joe Dart Bass by SBMM

My Observation After about 8/9 months of playing the SBMM Joe Dart 2024 crop, I've noticed how well the strings have settled. It's pillowy witha nice smooth bottom end and a sweet, albeit softer, high end. Still very punchy and percussive, which we expect from the SBMM H p/up. Note: I find the...

    Half Wounds

I didn't like the way the D'Addario Half Wounds sounded on any of my P-Basses BUT, I do suggest you try and see how you like them. They're initially a bit 'sticky,' but if you give 'em some time, that wears out. I prefer Rotosound Rounds or D'Addario Chromes (old and broken in) on P-Basses...

    Half Wounds

IME it depends on the particular bass and what you hear in your head. I have used the D'Addario Half Wounds for years and love them on a couple of basses. BTW - I've heard very good things about GHS Pressure Wounds, I don't have personal experience with them but have heard they're amazing...

First time I’ve ever played Flats!

When I acquired my Squier VM Amber P bass, it came with old Chromes... I had never left strings on a bass after acquiring but these just felt right. Yes, I cleaned them thoroughly (no boiling LOL)
  31. GrapeBass

First time I’ve ever played Flats!

FYI - These will take quite a few months, yes months, to break in. IME the lows will 'tighten' and the highs will diminish some and become 'sweeter.'

How to get bass tone on Stayin‘ Alive

Flats (essential) played w/ a pick with reverb. Bass sounds like it could be a Rickenbacker or even a Gibson but I'm sure a P bass might get you in the ballpark.

SBMM Joe Dart 2025 just dropped

After a while, the flats break in quite nicely. I find the pickup very hot and keep the volume rolled down quite a bit. I don't mind as it give me more play. The EB flats initially sounded a bit too gritty to me but as they have broken in, they are settling quite nicely.

SBMM Joe Dart 2025 just dropped

Fr the first run, I waited 6 months. Was it worth it? Yup, it's one of the best basses I've added to the stable, sits on its own pedestal.

NAD - the TC Electronic BQ500 finally showed up!

I just ordered one (backordered) from Amazon (Canada). Price was just C$205+tax, which is damn good. Hopefully it will be delivered sometime relatively soon - LOL. Since it's so small, it'll probably live it's life as a practice and backup amp.
