The bass is being assembled. It should be up and running in a couple of days. Here are some progress pictures.
The p-up casings have been sanded to 4000 grit and dyed black. I wiped the dye off after about 10 minutes and repeated the process about six hours later.
Here they are, after the first hand of dye, sitting inside the cavities to check the colour. At this stage they were not yet connected to the pre amp.
Here it is, all soldered and fixed. The preamp is a Delano 3 bands with mid freq switch. The little pad on the back of the cover helps keeping the battery in position. There's another one underneath the battery.
And that thing reflected on the cover is the ceiling of my sandbox.
I should very soon take final pictures and upload them. It's not the 'taking pictures' thing... it's the uploading to Photobucket that's reaaaally a PITA.....

Writing this post makes me smile. This build has taken quite some time and yet, here we are. I consider this bass almost a prototype in its own right. Designing and building the neck especially has been an interesting process. It has been also extremely enriching to go through all the details with the owner and share, compare our ideas about what a funk bass should be like.
So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, the Über-Jay Funk Machine.
This is by far the lowest set up I have ever achieved. Any lower than this strings would probably sit under the frets.
It plays effortlessly. I can do series of triplets by just looking at the strings LOL. I like everything about this bass. The neck feels like getting increasingly comfortable as the hand progresses towards the heel. It's a feeling I really like.
It weights 7.5 lbs. or 3.4kg. My 5ers usually weigh around 6.5lbs when chambered. This one is not and the hardware is all brass. So you know where the extra weigh comes from.
Strapped on though it feels as neutral as the others. A proof that total weight doesn't matter as much as weight distribution.
I still have today to record sound clips. Shipping tomorrow.

Early morning recording. As soon as my neighbors are off to work, that is.
Even after having used it a few times, I still find the Zoom H4 stereo recorder complicated to use. I don't know why, but I just don't seem to be able and memorize the steps. Maybe it's me. Maybe if I recorded more often
It's just a drag every time.Do you record by plugging your bass straight into your laptop? Mac users, do you use Garage Band at all for this? I am not sure what the tone would be like without an amp?
Any advise from the studio mavericks?

I don't think you want to plug straight into the laptop, but into an interface or DI box that is plugged into the laptop. It will sound fine without an amp, that's how I recorded mine. A lot of studios don't mic bass amps anyway.
I think Garage Band would probably work fine. I've never actually recorded on it, because I use Logic, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Being an active bass, plugging straight into the line in should work just fine.
I just thought the line in might take a different type of cable. TS vs. TRS, etc. I'm not sure what kind the "line in" port takes.
LOVE this bass! I like almost everything about it. Only thing I'd change is the nut width (assuming you went with 1 7/8"?) and string spacing.

Hey, 1 7/8" nut is fine with me (keeps the string spacing of my jazz). To each his own, though!
Beautiful bass. Will have to catch up on this thread. (Guessing bridge spacing is 19mm, btw?)
I don't think he mentioned the actual nut width, I just assumed that since this bass is supposed to be "classic" and because of the string spacing.
Any more than 45mm or so and the neck starts to get uncomfortably wide. I don't mind thick necks (as in front to back) but I don't like really wide necks.
19mm spacing is okay but I prefer tighter spacing since I play fingerstyle and don't really slap.

You might be right, I have an audio interface and a mixer so I haven't had to record anything without it in years. But I seem to remember back before I got my interface going straight into the line in with a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.
