You know it's nothing else than the same thing Jimi Hendrix did with his guitar live. What did those strats cost in those days, they where the "new ones" at the late 60's? CBS strats? Was their price 100 USD? 200 USD? Now, Jimi burned them only when he knew there was film cameras and tv crews filming large festivals. He burned it once at Monterey Pop. Smashed them, he did several times. But that did the Who too. Nothing new. The evening after, the TV media news sensationalised it (would be quite dim on radio news), and showed a flick for even 10 seconds...in all TV news stations all across the USA...and people were appalled to it all. Mind you, this on prime time! Same thing happened in England. Cheapest cost for a publicity stunt ever, and the return back. A few weeks after his albums were at top 10. Go figure. 289 USD for a 10 second spot on all channels news station all across USA, at the same prime time. He gained national attention. Not regional, or local.
How can anyone top that for a publicity stunt impact?
Granted, after that one, all tv-stations looked at each other and thought..."arhemmm, uh no....not again, that one only worked once". But that "once" was all it took!
No one called him an idiot after that.

A black friday sale? After christmas sale? It is an opportunity you can't miss! How would we know about this, if it wasn't for the first run?
Would we even bother?Does anyone seriously think that bass is a bargain, buying it now, just because it has been priced at 1 million earlier?

Just to give the younger folk perspective: $289.00 in 1967 had the same buying power as $2,062.63 in 2015.
Silly...good luck with that. I saw one of those collector magazines yesterday, had a Bigbsy guitar listed for $400,000.00 (looked like the one Joe Maphis had, maybe his actual guitar?). Seemed kinda steep. Mike Bloomfield's 63 Tele listed at a mere $60k.

FastKev61 paid a nominal listing fee (possibly zero dollars) to get his list of collectible guitars & basses for sale in front of a lot of people, including almost 4k impressions to TalkBass members, his exact target demographic. That's what we professional advertising planners call "a smart buy".
The rest of his stuff is reasonably priced. He's not crazy. This listing was never meant to sell that bass.

Still today, way cheaper than paying for 10 second advertising slot on prime time TV on all channels simultaneously. Even back then. You should compare it to that instead.
Well today you could just get a Squier Affinity, put a Fender neck on it, burn the body, and then put the Fender neck on the next body...
AFAIK The Who (or their crew) used to rescue the smashed up guitars and rebuild them and the ones being smashed up were not the main players for the bulk of the set.
The next question is whether nitro finishes burn more prettily than poly finish and does the fullerplast cause it to go out too soon?
