Double Bass 1/4 tuning

What are 1/4 basses tuned to? Is it standard EADG or different because of it's size?

I just sold one of these little Kay basses to a tiny adult person. She's tuning it standard pitch. It think that I'd be inclined to use some light tension strings and tune it up a fourth to A-D-G-C for low volume intimate musical settings. There really wasn't much of a note on this bass below the C on the A string. It was previously used by a teacher for getting kids started playing doublebass.

A group I play with has a small 1/4 size bass in the rehearsal space. I still can't seem to get over the fact that is seems like a large cello. I guess the biggest draw back when you compare to 3/4 size is just the lack of bottom and volume.

As Steve said, can we re-appropriate these as tenor basses?

Haha well I'm 5'7 so idk I just put a longer end pin in. She's currently at eadg so we will see.

When I had my 1/4 Kay I played it while sitting on a stool about 18" high. I had it strung with some Red Labels which worked out to be pretty playable on the short measure tuned EADG. The string height was set on the high side and the little bass was surprisingly thumpy and loud for it's size all the way down to low E. With the strings set fairly high, I could really lay it on with my right hand and that helped the little bass to project.

They have a special place in my heart as a little work horse! They may not have the low end or appeal but they are an upright just like the big ones.

I thought the same thing. Maybe there's a typo in the OP's post with the pic and he's really only 4'7".
