1 Bad string?

Being a very inexperienced new player, I've not bought that many string sets ( 3) to build a reference point.

Just acquired an, as new- Ibanez gsr200 bargain ,wanted a cheapo extra bass to keep in my van to practice.
Then I put on a set of Fender flat wounds @ 46 quid.

The A ,D and G all sound really good, and massive improvement to the originals,
BUT the E string! Hard to explain the sound, its as if affects echo has been applied, and fretting the low F is not a nice tone`.

My question is : Do you sometimes get one bad string in a pack?

as a note ; I also removed the 9 volt cheep preamp, thinking it could be the problem,
I did not like the sound anyway ,made no difference to the problem, but now as a passive set up, it sounds a bit cleaner.

Thanks

Sounds like it might be twisted. Loosen the E string to the point where you can let the ball end spin freely to untwist itself. Then tune it back up to pitch and set the witness point properly.

Do you know anything about "setting witness points"?

This might help: Witness Points: The Pictorial

Ad stated above, it’s certainly possible and it’s happened to me a couple of times.
However, definitely follow the advice on checking out the affected string as mentioned above.

Your E string is either twisted, or it's just a dud. It happens.

this is why I buy D'Addario ... they almost never have a bad string

I’ve had both a bad E string and also suffered from poor installation. It is worth reinstalling. It’s also worth getting an extra set just in case. Sometimes they don’t survive reinstalllation.

The E string is arguable the most important one so make sure you’re happy with how it plays. Take care not to overlap your wraps on the post as it will ruin tuning.

Being British I assume you have given Rotosound a try? I love their Jazz 77 flats but their Swing66 steel rounds is the one that gave me a bad E string which is apparently a known problem with that particular string.

Wasn't quite my luck with D'addario NYXLs. I liked them a lot, but after the first set, I had problems with one string in two consecutive sets. So I went back to the XLs, then the Pro Steels. To their credit, D'addario did replace the two problem strings very promptly. That was a couple of years ago. I just ordered 2 sets of the NYXLs that should be here Monday.

Nonetheless, because of their service and all the great D'addario strings I've used for the last 3-4 years (from Ernie Balls, which were fine until one day, they weren't). I'm sticking with them.

OP, glad you figured out the issue with the problem string.

Thank you all,
Was a twisted string, it now growls!

I love that post #2 suggested a possible cause..... and then post #6 confirmed that it was correct and the string now sounds fine.

I love it when TB works!
