#1 basses (Let's see 'em) [Poll]

Do you have a #1 bass?

  • Yep. It's my baby!

  • Nope. Each bass serves a different purpose.

  • Kind of... I have a favorite, but it doesn't always get played.

  • I have a favorite carrot, does that count?

i have one that i call my "main" or my "#1"....

...but i have another (almost the same), and the two are so close they're interchangeable if they have the same string set.

i also have a "variety" = and they're my #1/main when i'm playing them, so: i'm not sure how to rate my own axes any more! i prefer PJs or two-pickup axes but my P-basses are so much fun that i'd say they're all cut out for the same "application" (in my world).

TL;DR --- maybe i do, maybe i don't! :D
Nice instruments! Hopefully someday you’ll be able to afford frets.

Not a straight forward answer. My number 1 was a Tele bass from 1970 until the early 80's. Then I got a '77 Jazz that became my number one. The Jazz stayed number 1 until I went to a Hamer fretless around
1998. I did eventually go back to the 77 Jazz but started building fretless jazz basses until I put together an Aerodyne fretless which became numero uno, what a great bass! That is until I went EUB a few months ago.

Fretless Cruise? That’s a keeper.

My #1 is a Fender 'AV '58 P with flats. And before that? A '62 style P with flats.

However, the basses that I collect the most, by far, are early generation G&Ls.

The bass I have played at the most gigs and practices, by far, is my '75 Musicmaster Bass (with...flats). While never really being #1 itself, I have played it frequently, and it has been there through four different #1s.

Both of these are Fender American Specials. The black pickguard one is a 2010 and my hands down #1. The white pearloid one is a 2011 and spot-on consistent with the 2010 (weight, neck, tone, etc) but is #2 as I keep it tuned to Eb and used less as a result. Both had the higher mass bridge added, Fender Custom '62 pickups, and DR HiBeams. In total, I have owned 51 basses since I started playing in 2008. Many US and Japan Fenders, G&L, Musicman, Reverend, Godin, ad nauseam. I've owned up to 9 at one time, but now down to just three. My third bass is a very nice American Standard Precision that was supposed to be my #1. I bought my first American Special as a less expensive backup, but it forced it's way to my top spot, and the other Special soon followed. The Specials have what is called a "shallow C" neck which has slightly less wood front to back (regular P nut width). It's subtle but it feels less round to my hand and I love that profile.

Well, it was a great bass that opened the door to fretless for me. I did play it exclusively for a few years.
But when I retired, and downsized to a cabin in the mountains, I had to sell off a lot of stuff including the Cruise along with a MM, a Tobias 5, an uprigh, a bunch of bass amps and pa equipment. Up until then I had never sold a thing.

BTW that Hendrix poster went to my son and the Line 6 is gone. It was a great amp but at 90+ lbs it was just too heavy for this old guy!

I'm curious... how many TBers have a #1 bass? Or are you like me and you have a variety of basses that are each #1 for their specified application?

Either way, we all love bass pics. Let's see those #1 basses!
I have a variety, but since last summer this has been #1 and there hasn’t been anything I haven’t been able to play with it, from rock, to Latin, R&B, jazz. It’s constantly surprising me. ‘94 CIJ Sting signature Precision with Fralin pickup and rounds.
