1 cab 2x15/2x12 restoration advice?

Mixing plastic skulls and 15's is a bad idea, do a search. The skulls can't keep up with the 15's and they blow up. It's better to get all 15's or all plastic skulls for that cab.

Skulls with a decent Xmax can arguably outperform the 15" speakers. What you need to worry about is whether you are getting polysterene or PVC skulls. They both have similar tonal properties but some people say the PVC skulls sound "too modern" and that the polysterene ones have a "warm, round, and resolving tone"

The PVC skull would compliment a hemp cone 15 just fine....if it sounds good, it is good.

Hey Patrick- it's Karl! Welcome to the dark side of bass obsession (ie- the place where I helped justify spending all that ridiculous money on gear over the years)...

Cool cab too- I wonder how good a match the size and tuning would be for the CBs? I would probably second the idea of getting rid of the 12s for the sake of weight savings, though the guitar speaker idea would be cool if you were willing to invest time into building a good high-pass filter and modifying the inside of the box to isolate them from the 15s.

The fEarful thing being mentioned (in case you haven't read up on it yet) is an incredibly well designed and efficient DIY cabinet design using some of those Eminence neo speakers paired with a smaller midrange speaker and a crossover that allows smoother and wider response than just about any production cabinets. There are free plans available on here as well as a handful of people who will build them for money, though the price of the neo speakers these days makes them slightly less appealing than a year ago! The price does seem to have dropped a little though I believe?

Don't get hung up on the "2 ohms, more power" thing, it's a dead end. Better, and especially more speakers gets you louder than throwing more power at the same thing ever could. You got a helluva powerful amp. 800 watts and a couple of good 15's is more than enough to summon the cops to your door.

Besides, I don't know where you're getting your information but it's been a well established fact in professional audio circles for many, many years that the synergistic properties of a well balanced combination of polyvinylchloride and hemp fiber is far superior to the common pulp cone. It ain't exactly like it's gnu gnus.

Hey fellas,
This is my first thread and already it is the best one I've read. I've decided to go with actual human baby skulls from Cambodia, adult skulls won't fit in the 15 inch holes. For lighting I'm thinkin' strobe...

I think I will be changing the baffle to 2x15s. With the absence of the 12s I may actually be able to swing the neodymiums. I will buy a beater Peavey 8x10 on CL for now and just blow it to bits while the big boy is under construction.

Will33 I think you have a point about wattage vs. speaker efficiency- 800 watts will likely do fine.
Did I read correctly that these fEarfuls are 1100 bucks? Is that assembled or materials mailed? If that is so, I feel justified at fixing this one up, getting it pretty and crushing all opposition for under 800. It'll look way cooler than the fEarfuls do, I assure you. I didn't mention that it needed to look sweet earlier, but it does for me.

p.s.- did I mention I'm the singer, not the bass player? We can't lock anybody down here in the city of lost angels; no one can be bothered when there's so much pay for play work here in town. So I'm building a rig and taking the rumble into my own hands.

Billfitzmaurice- I like your advice, but I just don't have 1100 bucks to drop. Apart from that, and I didn't really mention this, I want it to LOOK badass, and those fEarfuls just don't get my blood up. It's sexy to me to imagine inefficient things that still kick your ass- like a '70 Dodge Charger, or a Tyrannosaurus rex. I will very likely go with your speaker recommendation though. What a price on those 15s! If I change the baffle to the 215 configuration we are well within budget.

Now what about deadening materials? You can see in the pics it has some insulation but should I beef it up? are there internal wiring issues to deal with? Tomorrow I'll get the measuring tape and give you all the internal dimensions. It is not a small cab, and it seems plenty deep.
