I forgot to answer the question:

One Fender. As nice for the money as I think the SX basses are (and I own two), they are, indeed, merely nice for the money. For all intents and purposes they sound identical to Fenders, but other than Savit, I don't think anyone would say they play as well or feel as comfortable.
 
A SX may be a lot of things, but its not a bass to try to flip a profit on -- not in our lifetime! :)

They said the same thing about my MIJ Fender Strat when I bought it 20 years ago...

However, every SX bass I've layed my hands on played awfully and felt cheaply made...I'll stick with one Fender and know that it will last as long as I need it to without having to make hundreds of dollars of upgrades to it in order to make it playable...

Keep in mind, my numero uno SX had the frets worked over by a very good luthier. ;)
