1 Hour Chuck Rainey Lesson?

what your paying for with is a pro @ his level of experience. If it was just the music take 85.00 worth of lessons from Jaquo, You'll get more out of it. However, experience wise very few players can offer what Chuck Rainey can, and out of those who can, how many do? $85.00 is a bargin. I wonder what Chuck Rainey pulls down an hour in the studio?

Back in the 80s, when I took my lessons from Berlin, he was charging $60. So, a buck a minute. I thought it was a GREAT deal, considering he gave me 1500 or so exercises the first day...I still haven't absorbed it all. But I learned how to teach, and it definitely affected my thought processes in bass. Was it worth it to me? Absolutely! Would I do it again at $85 from Chuck? Yes. I have been really fortunate in my life to have met a bunch of my heroes, lived with some great players, to have been able to glean life experiences from them, to cop a lick or two here and there, and to be privileged to call many of them "friend". :)

Thanks, J, for the update.
Just want to make sure I'm still around to buy a copy!
;)

No worries Jim,you'll be getting a free copy.

Don't get me wrong here, I LOVE Chuck Rainey.
And have a world of respect for the man and could only imagine to be able to do what he does.

But 1 hour. $85??
Umm....no.

Bill Dickens charges $100 a hour for lessons and gets it.

Bill's rate is less than what a lot of heavies charge. Y'all know what Patitucci charges, right? Not the right thing to say the figure here, but it's more than $100 an hour.

I'ma gonna hit BD up soon to really nail down some double-thumb stuff and pick his brain. As always, I'll have a list of stuff to ask him and use the time wisely.

Fodera charges upwards of $8000+ for a bass and gets it.
That doesn't mean it's worth it to every one.

For me, I would take Chuck Rainey over Bill Dickens.
But still not for $85.

And if BD gets that amount, good for him. I'm not knocking him or Rainey.

Just to me, it's not worth it.
Now, if I had money to burn, I would have a lesson every week. But I'm not sure that I feel that it would be worth it, but what the heck at that point if I was rich!

I would pay Bill Dickens to take a lesson from Chuck Rainey!!!:D

+10 to all that say they would pay $85 for a lesson with Chuck. I wish I lived where I could take a lesson with Chuck.

Also Master level lessons $85 is on low end of what they charge. Anyone who thinks that is too much is just plain cheap and clueless. Here in L.A. good teachers are getting $50-$60 an hour so for a master lesson for $85 is a deal and honor.

In Toronto lessons for beginner guitar/bass/piano etc. students averages about $24 a half hour. $85 doesn't sound too much to me for a lesson with someone with the credentials of a Chuck Rainey.

I guess Jeff Berlin teaches in New York? I like his demeanour. I'm thinking that guy would kick my ass in ways I never dreamt.

I don't know what I would ask Chuck Rainey. I have a pretty good idea what questions I would ask Jeff Berlin. As a matter of fact I'm going to start a new thread on this!

Heck I've paid a plumber that much an hour. I think Chuck is worth at least what a plumber gets.

Rainey has been one of my favourites for quite awhile...that said-
...$85 for a good plumber when you really need him is not that much. Trust me.
;)

Rainey used to write, like, the ONLY Bass-oriented column you could find during the '70s (Guitar Player mag). Lotta info in those one-page "Workshops".
Bass Player's early issues also had columns/editorials by Rainey. More good stuff.

No, it's just an opinion if someone thinks it's too much.
Just like if someone thought a comment like that came from an ass who's boarder line trolling.
Just an opinion.

If you disagree with an opinion, great, but call someone "cheap and clueless".........
Well, opinions abound!!:D

And one of the best teachers in Michigan- Dan Pliskow, who teaches at Wayne State University (who's Jazz program rivals just about any other school) and taught Robert Hurst gets $25 for 45 min.

Ralph Armstrong- last I heard was $30 for 45 min. But, that was a number of years ago.
You do know who Ralph Armstrong is right?

People can charge what they want, but that doesn't mean Chuck at $85 isn't worth it or a great price to spend time with a legend. I played guitar for many years and studied with Ted Greene won of the greatest Jazz guitarist a true guitarist's guitaris and incredible teacher. He only charged $20 for hour lesson and I understand before he died he had only gone to maybe $30. At same time a lesson with Joe Pass would of been $50-$60. Did that make Joe over priced no he was a legend and that is what he wanted. Ted was a mellow guy and loved to teach so he charge less.

My comment was over the top and I apologize for the words used, but my feeling isn't any different. Because Ralph Armstrong (yes I know who he is) only wants to charge $30 that is his decision, but in no way reflects on the price legends get for their lessons or the value of their lesson. What determine value is what you walk away with from the lesson. The value could be in them spotting something no one else seen or heard in your playing. A great insight on how to looks at some music, or just the inspiration from just getting to talk to and watch up close your hero play.

So I would gladly pay $85 for an hour with Chuck Rainey for I know I would get all of the above from the experience. Right now I'm trying to get a lesson with one of the DB world's legends and I know that will be way more than $85, but worth it to me.

I think you and I mis-understood each other. Or actually, I mis-spoke and led people wrong to my meaning.

I didn't mean to imply that he isn't worth it to someone in a "like a fool and their money soon part ways" aspect.

Just given my perspective to guys here in town (like Ralphe) who IMO, should get the same respect as others like Chuck Rainey.
Again, Chuck Rainey is in my top 5 of all time fav bass players and I have nothing but respect for him.

I just have a different slant on it thats all.

No harm no foul. And my reply was kinda harsh so I also extend my hand in appology if it was offensive.
