11 warning signs of depression

I wouldn't underestimate that tbh, have you spoken to anyone close about this? If I may ask.

Yes I have.. I know it's nothing to underestimate, but I've never attempted anything and would never. I'd say it's more thoughts of wishing I was the kind of person who was of the mind enough to actually do it...just something to seemingly stop the stress. It's hard to explain.

I'm un-touchable by depression, things get bad enough I just whip out my Powers of Apathy and I'm fine. Can't change what ain't there :)

But seriously, I've seen some BAD stuff go down 'cuz of depression, no bueno man. If you're feeling down for a while please talk to someone at least, and if you see someone who has been a lot less themselves lately, talk to them! I'd be dead or in prison if some folks hadn't stepped in when I was not doing well.

Peace,
Greg

I don't think I have any of those symptoms and I can't afford another depression in my life.

"Oh, Bull****!" That was the favorite of the school principal. Once again the assumption was that I just wanted attention.

None of this made me feel any better, but it transformed most of my sadness into intense, powerful hatred for other people. Conservation of negative energy, I guess.....But I'd rather be hateful than sad and self-destructive.

Now that I read this, I think the hatred inside me might have been caused by this too.

I had it really bad when I was 14-15 years old. I was on meds and my doctor told me if he gave these to a grown man he'd pass out, but it wasn't effecting my depression. I was like a study for his career, he had never seen anything like me before, he said.:p

One time the school principal started to yell at me for no good reason and I started laughing uncontrolably. She was so pissed that she told me exactly: "This psychiatrist you see is no good to you, you should be locked up in a cage to never see the sunshine."

Now, when I think about this kinda stuff from past I just laugh and say **** it. But the hatred inside me effects me in many ways. (For example, I don't like babies. They are the new born of my least favourite species to me, not some cute love ball.:ninja:)

Wow, I just figured a lot about myself. I feel better already.:D

Seriously, though, I've never been comfortable talking to people about depression. Whenever I got a touch of teenage melancholy, the respose was always so condescending and judgemental, that I really felt alone and unable to confide in others. This solitude and expectation to bottle negative feelings actually made me depressed to an extent. I still have trouble admitting when I'm upset. I try to be positive, though. I mean, here I am typing this to a bunch of strangers...

I feel the same way about talking about being sad, depressed etc.

When I'm upset, I go away and be with myself. (usually accompanied witha few bottles of booze. This tying to be positive thing is good, it's new to me but I'm getting used to it.

Interesting to see another man from the other side of the planet sharing similar feelings and thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear this man, and I can empathize completely, been there many times and will again, guaranteed. For me it is kind of like this in explanation:

A relentless flood of fear, anxiety and dread that no amount of preparation could possibly prepare you for, racing thoughts to the extent of a feeling of virtual detachment from yourself, others, faith and most everything, overtaken by a sense darkness so merciless it defies comprehension in being so viciously cruel.

Who wouldn't consider stopping that with what seems the only light at the end of that tunnel that you still feel you have a choice in, but you know deep down it's not the way.

I read a lot during those periods, which may last up to 6 months in my instance, any kind of distraction technique to try and take myself out of myself for a while.

I would recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I found that beneficial, I did also have a good counsellor to work with it. There is no one easy fix I'm afraid, but for the fact of reinforcing that it will not last forever and that things do change. Though I know it's seemingly impossible to get a window just for comfort while you are in that frame.

Antidepressants, personally are not for me, I did try a few, but if it works, it works, any port in a storm as they say.

Take care man and remember, things will change, you will come out the other side and wonder 'what the flock was all that about?'

Peace brother, I wish you well, stay safe.

Thank you. Well fortunately for me my depression goes in an out on a daily basis...sometimes during the day. For me at least right now it's brought on by all the changes I've faced. I've tried anti-depressants as well and they don't really work for me. They usually screw up my muscle function and I'd rather be depressed than be unable to stand up. I don't like the idea of needing meds to get through something like this anyway. I've powered through enough that I think I could power through this, but this is the most difficult thing I've faced.

Similar story with me, except, I love babies and hate everyone else. To me they're the only people that haven't turned into d-bags yet. They just want to be fed, changed and put back to sleep. I can deal with that.

It is interesting. The type of depression I have is called "Dysthymia". It's sort of on the bi-polar spectrum. It's a chronic depressed mood with occasion "double dip" depression.

The double is that you are generally depressed with an occasional major depressive episode on top of it.

Oddly enough the "Sword of Damocles" song from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" describes it perfectly:

I woke up this morning with a start when I fell out of bed
and left from my dreaming was a feeling of unnameable dread
My high is low
I'm dressed up with no place to go
and all I know is
I'm at the start of a pretty big downer

Here's the song if for some reason you've never heard it:
Sword of Damocles - YouTube

It's made funny by the fact that it's a really up tempo song but with depressing lyrics.

That song was my anthem long before I had any understanding that there was something call "clinical depression"

Ok, I'll stop boring everyone now.

You can't be sad. I mean come on, you're Macaroni Tony. With an avatar like that, you just can't be sad.

I always thought of you as such a happy guy floating over clouds. I guess I was mislead by the Macaroni Tony PS thread.:p

If it's any consolation, I'm a very handsome man.:D,

;)

Interestingly enough...that PS thread is a good representation of the real MT. Constantly silly, but it's all a facade :D

My girlfriend had all those 11 symptoms about half a year ago before we came in a relationship together and were just friends. Back then it seemed for me like I didn't have a chance on ever getting to be in a relationship with her, but I did stay her best friend anyway and helped her out of that depression. She still has some of the symptoms, but I can clearly feel that she is much more happy now than she was back then, and that she feels safe and happy being together with me. I have a very good feeling inside knowing that I have helped another person getting her happiness and enjoyment of life back. As a bonus I got the sweetest and most beautiful girlfriend in a world, though that was not solely because I helped and supported her, thought it may have helped.

Almost all of those symptoms can be associated with things like being pregnant and a thyroid condition too.

Yeah, you shouldn't self-diagnose based on what you read in articles or see on pill advertizements. That's the kind of thing that starts a drug addiction.

Depression can be the cause - it can be a symptom. It's very important to realize that there are a LOT of things that can make you feel any and all of those things listed here. It's so easy to see ourselves in these kind of lists - but rarely does it accurately represent our individual realities.

A healthy skepticism and genuine curiosity will take you far.

Caveat emptor, baby.
